abolishing cheats in Oblivion.

I have been playing Oblivion for about a year now and i am impressed by the quality of the games design as well as the games overall difficulty. my problem lies in the fact that it is FAR too easy to cheat in this game. with the console at your fingertips and many exploitable glitches. (not to mention built-in conveniences like fast travel) this really dampens the experience and makes the game, in effect easy.

not to say it isnt my fault. a bit of self-control goes a long way in keeping to a legitimate cheat-free character. but with such easy access to cheats and glitches, the temptation is almost always there and in tight spots where you simply dont want to figure it out on your own you are more inclined to just hit the tilde key and cheat your way out of it.

which brings me to my point. is there a way to actually turn off the cheats in Oblivion? or at least eliminate access to them? i want to play a cheat-free game and rather then have a battle of will-power with a game (which is frustrating in its own right) i should just as well eliminate the temptation all together by erasing or banning those cheats from the game.

is it possible?

Yeah, I think it could be done by removing the ~ key's console-opening function in the key set, right? Or just taking that key off your keyboard, since it generally is for opening consoles in all games and I have never used it otherwise (don't take my word on that, though).

You could open your oblivion.ini (Can be found at my documents/my games/oblivion) and change:

bAllowConsole=1

to

bAllowConsole=0

ooooh, then i can put a password on the file itself to make it so i cant edit it anymore! XD

i just really want to play the game to its fullest and i know that with such easy access to cheats, its hard to resist using them.

(i just downloaded mods that disabled fast travel and the difficulty slider. set the slider to max first :wacko: )

Wow. Not being able to modify the game to my own tastes would kill it for me. Being able to turn off the grass because somebody dropped a weapon in the tall weeds and you can't find it. Getting stuck in a wall and not being able to get out. Being able to enter console codes to get around a bug that keeps you from completing a quest. (Just had to do that yesterday with the bugged Sanguine quest.) Think real hard before you make your decision.

apparently i didnt have to think that hard...cause it didnt work. i changed it and loaded my game...and the game changed it right back. and theres no option in the default file in the program folder either....looks like i need to find an alternate solution.

any takers? XD

I Suppose it would be posible to mod away the cheats, but it would require an expert scripter. it would probably be easier to take 8_of_11's advice and pop the tilde key out, and put it somewhere safe(mabey lock it up)

lol, i did just that and the key flew off in an unknown direction!!! heh, i guess thats that, but id still like to hear of a way to totally disable the console cheats. cause knowing me (and probably quite a few other gamers) id hunt that little male without a father down and plug it back in.

not to mention popping out the key makes my keyboard look aesthetically unpleasing :-(

Are you sure you changed the right file? There are two oblivion.ini files, one in the oblivion directory, one in "my games" where your saves are stored. It's the latter you have to alter.
