Ok, this started as a crash after I didn't play Oblivion for a while. I can't find any answers or similar crashes so here we go.

I am running no mods, I have the GOTY, so it's patched, and I have tried with no saves. I checked the registry, not anything odd there.

Essentially, when I run Oblivion, it loads up to the main menu, I click new game, the load bar moves about 4 pixels, then crashes with an error report. not a memory read error. I have tried with mods on, mods off, and reinstalling.

Did you remember to start with OBSE? That is a typical crash when OBSE is needed and not started - OR when there is a missing master (.esm) file needed by a mod (.esp) file.

I had, yes. But also, I shouldn't have even needed OBSE seeing as how Oblivion.esm is the only plugin.

I'm doing a completely fresh install. Removing all my mods and removing the oblivion folder. Hopefully it's a corrupt BSA or something.

So, just grand, completely flushing Oblivion did nothing. When I click new game it just closes the window, so I can't start a new game. Copied an old save, same old crash. ANYTHING is welcome at this point.

First check the obvious stuff

The GOTY only installs the latest patch when Shivering Isles is installed.

Did you move the location where the game is installed? Where?

Have you tried removing the Oblivion.ini (the one where your save games are located) and allowing the game to create a new one?

For reinstalling - just using the game uninstall doesn't really uninstall everything and those left behind registry entries can cause crashes.

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.
