Used to work flawlessly now stutters very randomly

Recommended Posts

I played about 170 hours (yikes!) of FNV with flawless performance. I even had a handful of mods. The only issue I ever had was indoors total choppiness which i fixed totally by disabling water reflections on my nvida card. I took a several month break from the game. Got new speakers and a new USB Creative Sound Card (replacing my integrated one), that's the only change I can think of. All of the sudden the game gets very randomly choppy, moving around, although I can turn around quickly without issue. It will work fine for 5-10 minutes then bam, moderately choppy running around and using in game menus is almost impossible as the cursor jumps around everywhere.

I disabled all the mods, updated my graphics card, re-verified steam cache (it found one file and replaced it, but the problem persists). Tried that d9.dll to no avail.

The strange thing is that it works PERFECTLY for 5-10 minutes and then freaks out for no apparent reason. Indoors, outdoors, with monsters present, without, just strolling around the campground, in the middle of combat - it makes no sense at all. If I reload, it is still messed up that way with creatures dancing around oddly and menus unusable. And it gets weirder. If I exit the game and come back it I get a different choppy issue - it lags if I turn around quickly, whereas it didn't do that before - but the other type of choppiness is suddenly gone. I'm at my wits end, so any help would be appreciated. My specs are attached.

Thanks.

can you supply me with a windows load list while the game is active? Alt+tab Task man Maybe a screen shot or in the same form of a txt file here would be great.

well, I uninstalled everything and reinstalled and it didn't work. Then I hard deleted everything except my saved games and uninstalled and reinstalled again and despite my telling steam not to patch it, it did. Is there anyway to roll back the patch or something? I even tried a really old game before any mods and that doesnt work either. I have a feeling patch 1.3 killed my game. Edited by CaptainChaos

Spent (wasted) all day testing and retesting. I'm not 100% sure but I don't think it has anything to do with my companions per se which I both told to wait and send them to the Lucky 38. However, going to VATS, watching a death sequence or opening containers appears to start the bug - sometimes. Sometimes it does not. Im about 80% certain that one of those is a trigger though. Sometimes it clears itself a few minutes later and sometimes it persists for 15-20 minutes before i rip my hair out and quit and log in again.

you fellas need to roll back you operating systems to Dump the registry entries of steam and it's dreaded patch. Disconnect for the internet before doing so. after it is restored back to a date before the patch was applied, check your user\app data\temp folder and delete all the junk in there. Stay off the net and launch the game. It should run now.

The good news is that, your suggestion did roll it back. The bad news is that it CTDs as soon as the Launcher tries to start it. I tried this with Steam online and offline. I can try and reverify the cache on steam, hopefully that will not update it as well.

As can be expected, this updated the game to 1.3. It now works but has the issues before. Any advice on how to roll it back and not CTD. I can't know what was causing the crash, but b/c that evil Steam is involved, unlike the good old days, I can't seem to just reinstall from scratch without updating and while having it work.

there ya go, keep the faith. Now go into the temp folders and get rid of the crap thats left over, and run a registry cleaner before attempting to mess with the game.

Delet the ini files in the games foler in your documents and allow the engine to recreate them. This should allow it to launch.

Once you have allowed the game to actually launch successfully, DO NOT CONTINUE ! start a new game. Why? Because your still setting up the Ini files during this procedure. If you try to load the old saved game before this. Bang, your game is dead. Understand now?
