The lord of the rings: a freeware adventure game on the Skyrim engine

Hello everyone, I hope you're as excited about Skyrim as me.

If you're like me, you will also enjoy the lord of the rings series (the films or the books) as well as the elder scrolls. It isn't hard to see why, as the two series have a lot in common.

I was reading some Skyrim previews the other day, and I saw a bit about dual wielding weapons, in particular they mention a "gandalf style" sword and staff combo. This set me thinking, and I believe that the Skyrim engine would be perfect for the ultimate lord of the rings game, and it should be built as a mod by us.

Now I'm not talking a small, add on mod, I'm talking something like a master file, with a whole new map and characters. this would be a huge undertaking and I don't have much modding experience, so we're going to need quite a few ecperienced modders on board Therefore I'm posting today to test the waters and see if anyone would be interested in being part of such a project.

I know the release of Skyrim (and its construction set) is six months away, but I think that this project needs to be started ASAP so that we can get as much preliminary work (concept maps, scripts etc.) finished as possible so that on release day we can start actual modding and get the project complete as soon as we can afterwards.

If you want to join in, could you please make a post in the following format:

Modding experience: how good you think you are at modding

Mods: post the name of any mod you have published on TES nexus

Area: choose what part of the game you'd like to work on from the following:

Map & world-conception/programming

Cities & dungeons-conception/programming

Quests & dialogue-conception/programming

Characters-conception/programming

Items, weapons & equipment-conception/programming

Please be aware that you may not get the option you choose, but I will try to organise it so everyones happy.

If you have any questions, feel free to post.

Awesome. We're still gonna need people to draw concept maps for the modders to base the world on, as well as people to write the journal entries and dialogue (and maybe some people to capture sound bites from the movies to put into the dialogue). We'll also need some creative thinkers to plan side quests that fit in with the lord of the rings world while still adding variety. Long story short, the more the better. If you haven't read the actual books yet then I strongly advise you do, as we'll be trying to stick to the subject matter as closely as possible, and you may find some things that were missed out from the films that we could base side quests on.

Might as well get started right away. Slainify, can you draw a concept map for Hobbiton. Adkskaters, I'd like you to make Sting, Gandalf the white's staff and the one ring. Make them in the oblivion construction set and try them out in game.

O.K. Jagex, I wouldlike you to start writing the journal entries for Frodo's part of the main quest. Also, can you read through the original books and in particular look for any plot points that we can use to make side quests

Don't want to put this down or anything because this would be a great mod but have you done research on this? If you want to take on a project like this you should get in contact with the MERP Team. They have already spent years (I think) creating the LOTR world on the oblivion engine. But I have no idea if they plan to convert it onto the skyrim engine...which will have loads of problems itself. But aswel there was a fatal flaw when trying to create the LOTR world on the Oblivion engine: the engine had a limit cap on how many exterior cells could be made in one world space I.e. You can't fit Tolkien's massive world into the engine. And we don't know the capabilities of the skyrim engine in this regard. If your serious about this I think you should go to the MERP team.

o_O

Would you need more space than Cyrodil?

I imagine it would be possible to close off separate world spaces via mountain passes and/or impassable forests too, if necessary. Or even invisible walls over rivers.

It's not pretty but it could be functional :)

@OP: if you can assemble a team that is big enough and competent enough to make this feasible, I'll be happy to contribute for cities and quest creation.

Trustyperson is right. Size could be a problem. Edoras to Minas Tirith was supposedly a three day journey. You could probably cross Cyrodill in that time. If Skyrim isn't big enough, we'll have to cut back on wilderness size and move all the landmarks closer together.
