Finally Purchased My New Laptop!!!

Recommended Posts

I finally chose my new laptop [which had to be a laptop because I am going to college], and ordered it on Sunday. I was not wanting to go with an Alienware (dell) (was looking heavily at sager) but then when I went to order my parents were hesitant about the brand  (I am still only 17, so they have the buying power) so I looked last minute at Alienware, and to my surprise I liked the choice. The Alienware was $100 more, and didn't come with a 2720, but I think the trade off was worth it.

Alienware

18.4'' 1080p screen

2630

Dual 6970's

500gb hybrid drive

Sager

17.3'' 1080p screen

2720

single 6970

x2 500gb drives (only wanted one, but you had to have 2 with the sager)

That is just the basic differences, but I do get my 18.4'' dual graphics card fix because I had wanted the Sager 8120 but that was discontinued when I went to order it. That was a dark day in my books.

The Alienware also comes with all those neat features such as lighting (keyboard is something I really wanted, rest of Alienware lights are more of a novelty)

Anyways, just though I would post it to see what you think (remember I already ordered it, so be nice, criticism is fine, but I do not want any bashing  and remember, desktop was not an option, and I was looking for power. I know what I got into with size and battery life and have a pretty good understanding of internal components.)

Some good advice, and thanks for the positive comment. I would have preferred a desktop with a single powerful card, but to get that power in a laptop I needed dual graphics cards (I can't afford a good desktop + a laptop for college).

Congratulations! I just bought that Sager I believe you were looking at. I sort of wish I had known that Alienware came out with its 18 inch laptop before I ordered :(.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, that thing seems like a beast. How much does it weigh?

The sager is equally good, do not worry about it. The alienware weighs around 15-16 pounds (a bit of a downside  ) compared to Sagers 8.5lbs and will never get temps even close to that of Sager (Sagers only heat up to like 32*C under load, that is pretty amazing!). They both have their advantages, and its not like the Sager isn't able to run anything out there. (Don't forget, you can say the Sager is a Sager, + mad rep  ) Edited by tttttt

Wow, that thing is gonna be a pain to lug around. Yeah haha, I guess you're right. When it comes in about a week or two I'll post pictures and some benchmarks. I'm anxious to see how yours compares to mine. We both have the i7 2630 processor, the only major difference is I have an nvida gtx 485 card instead of the dual 6970s.

It will be interesting to see the comparison, but I am sure I will be very envious of the fantastic Sager temps, but from what I heard dell has finally improved their cooling somewhat. Other than that there will not be all that much difference I suspect

My lappy doesn't come in for about 2-3 weeks so it will be a while, but I will definitely have to post some pics and benchmarks. Also, congratulations on your news writer position

I got an Alienware M17x about a year ago as well. The only real problem I have with it is heat, otherwise it is great. Plus, the heat issue can be avoided by having a fan or something blowing in your general direction.

Of course, as soon as I got it, there was a better version on sale (I got it from Costco). But hey, that's just the way technology works, right? It is outdated as soon as you get it.
