A request for lore and realistic minded mods

Let me start by saying that I am a long term fan of the entire series of Fallout games, from the first to New Vegas. I grew up playing the first two and was hesitant to embrace the newer ones, but I have come around after seeing the community here do some profoundly amazing things with the construction kits. There a number of things submitted to the NV and FO3 Nexus that I absolutely adore, and while I may have never personally thanked each of the modders for their work, it is highly appreciated. I have done some modding stuff for the Mount and Blade series, so I'm familiar with the level of passion and time it takes to create many of these.

That said, I would like to request more mods that reflect what I would argue are more lore-friendly and realistic. While I admire the work, time, passion, and skill many have put into the mods they have made, some I find are just too game breaking for me. The number of Type 3 armours and houses that are obsessively clean seem remarkably out of place to me in a world beset by nuclear holocaust, disease, scorching heat, radiation, survivalism, and a general discontinuity from the American past. Fallout has always had some diversions from the typical post-apocalytpic theme, such as the Alien blaster or even the Monty Python purple armour infamous for its use in Fallout 2. Vault City in Fallout 2 seemed remarkably clean, as well. Many of the lingerie and sexual models seem somewhat in place in the strip, but seem odd amongst wastelanders. I spent some time going through Fallout 1 and 2, watching some post-apocalytic films and reading a few books with those elements to draw up some suggestions.

I've not yet attempted to make any mods for the Fallout series from Bethesda yet, so I can't say how plausible some of these suggestions or ideas may in fact be. I will also admit that while I did search the forums for related posts, none seemed to capture entirely what I was looking for, and there are over 250 pages currently. If I have overlooked or misread some of those posts, by all means, point them out to me and I will concede such. I appreciate anyone reading and giving thought to some of these.

Specifically this is what I'm looking for.

1. More clothing and armours that diversify the characters in the game, making them a touch more unique and quite worn. Wastelander Settler outfits seem kind of redundant and over used. I applauded the diversificiation of many of the new outfits in the game, but I also want something grungy, dirty, trashed and torn up. Scavengers should look sun-cooked and ravaged. I really enjoyed the Bloody Courier Clothing series, the Gunslinger outfit, and many of the duster variations I've found. If you know of any additional clothing and armours that fit the description, I would greatly appreciate it. I rather enjoyed the worn, distressed, haggard look of many of the original characters, especially the head of the Mojave Courier service in Primm.

2. Something a lot less pretty. While I adore high fashion and aesthetics, I always felt like the tribals, gangs, and wastelanders should look like grizzled, dity, homeless drifters. While I like and admire the work of the clean and interesting textures and models many have made, I want something that looks trashed. I've had a hard time finding hair styles, facial hair variants, new buildings, new weapon and weapon textures, models and other such things which reflected a period of intense survivalism and substance abuse. Many of the Fiends don't particularly look all that...menacing and rugged. For inspiration, I was looking at westerns like The Man With No Name trilogy (which I loved someone's mod of Eastwood's outfit in the films), The Unforgiven and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. New Vegas was trying to add a cowboy flair to it, so I also looked at what a convergence of Sci-Fi and Western would look like and saw the Joss Whedon "Firefly" series (and film Serenity) as good inspirations. Captain Mal's outfit and gun would be amazing.

3. I love the textures that have been done for guns with lots of wear and weathering. I may be in a minority, but I couldn't stand how the Combat Armours Mk2 and Reinforced were made. Something about their shape and appearance never sat right with me, though I suppose it is what they might look like when one tries to bring the models from the first Fallout games into the newer ones. Still, something that looked a bit more Lore friendly would be greatly adored.

4. Houses that don't reuse the same destroyed looking furniture and textures. The redundancy of the "clutter" textures and many of the buildings seem kind of a drag. Had I the knowledge, I would probably obsessively go through each town and redo everything with navmeshing and other techniques with new textures and buildings. I often download new player houses that replace sections of towns just to give a better, realistic, human feel to the game.

5. More people. One of the problems I find is the utter lack of human beings in the waste. At 200 years past the war, I would expect a lot more people. The engine may limit this, and I've tried using the populated casino mod, but I felt like something could be done to make a more realistic, alive looking city.

6. New poses that get integrated into the general NPC's. This may have been done, but it's hard for me to judge how integrated they are.

7. More facial hair and head hair. While I am a woman, I prefer playing male characters. I love a good, rugged guy, but I don't like having to sacrifice armours and clothing in having to use body replacers that require new textures.

8. Interesting and unique melee and unarmed weapons. While Cloud and Final Fantasy has great weapons, they don't fit with Fallout, for me, and I'd like to see some rugged looking axes, bludgeoning tools. The basic machete in the game and the fire axes are probably my favourite weapons, aside from the hunting rifle.

9. More shotguns. I've tried looking for a few and just not seen many I liked. I absolutely love double-barrel and break-action shotguns.

10. New weapon animations. I'd like to be able to carry a knife upside down, slashing with it quietly. The surrendering/reactionary mod where you can beat people into submission and disable them is fantastic. But I would also like to see some better unarmed attacks. The basics of just one-two punches, the sweep or "take down" that's only visible in 3rd person and the dirt throwing are good, especially with the paralyzing palm and uppercuts, but I'd like to see some more varied and interesting attacks.

11. Permanent disability. One of the aspects I always liked about the original two Fallouts was the cripple effect. I love that doctor's bags and such deal with issue and I love the hardcore survivalism introduced in New Vegas, but I'd like to see more of it.

12. Karma having some meaning other than having Cass leave you.

13. A playable guitar. As a guitarist, it would be cool to have an animation set up with a guitar track set to play, similar to the NPCs in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. I love the cowboy guitar player with the Mysterious Magnum.

14. More to the Strip. Vegas seems oddly barren given its "escape" from the bombs.

If any of these have been addressed already, please link me as I would be most gracious for you doing so. I have spent many hours combing through the index and categories looking for mods and I have found many that I absolutely adored and left feedback. For those who have put work into the modding time, I personally thank you. Even something like porting a quality Warhmmer 40k is hard work and skillful, even if I personally find it game-breaking. FOOK and other mods obviously address many of these issues, but so many mods conflict or override one another that its hard to find the best solutions and load orders for things.

I run a high end system, so my ability to diversify and load a lot of stuff into my RAM is obviously a privilege I have.

If you have any comments or want to add more, by all means, please respond.

For my personal inspirations, I looked into these kinds of things

The Book of Eli, Red Dawn, The Day After, I Am Legend, The Omega Man, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Doomsday, Resident Evil, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Dawn of the Dead, Firefly, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Penumbra, Amnesia:The Dark Descent, The Thief series of games, the Hitman series of games (I love the sneaking and silent stalking), The Last Man (by Mary Shelley), The Road, the TV series "Jericho," The Walking Dead, Lost, Twelve Monkeys, The Unforgiven, The Magnificent Seven, and others.

This link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_apocalyptic offers some possible ideas as well for imagery, themes, and ideas.

Again, if I am being redundant, I apologize. I just find so many mods that seem out of place, fantastical, magical, or otherwise unrealistic to me. This, of course, is but my opinion, but I know there are others out there who seek the same. I recently undertook the task of sticking to light armour and clothes with the hardcore mode on, fighting for the NCR and playing a mildly good, moral character.

These are my current mods and their load order, as FOMM states.

The best answer is to not use what you don't like, and do use what you do like.

If there's not enough of what you do like, learn how to make it yourself.

Some modders do take requests, but I would say most make what they want to see in the game, lore be damned. I would also guess that most modders learned how to make what they have made because there was nothing else quite right for them out there and they didn't want to wait for someone to come around and fulfill their request whenever they got around to it.

For the record I'm with you, and like more lore friendly stuff. Most of my mods reflect that.

Absolutely. I am going to download the G.E.C.K. and try my hand at it, but I am by no means an artist, so I would obviously have to learn. I planned on trying to learn how to use it and make my own textures and such as a way to introduce those elements into the game for others and myself. I only recently took a break from Mount and Blade games to take a more serious look at modding for NV. I find NV to be personally far better than FO3, though I will admit to liking both games. Learning to do it on my own, I don't have a problem with, I was just looking to field suggestions and not put out stuff already done. I appreciate your quick reply. Do you mind linking me to your mods? I would like to sift through them. :)

Well, I can't help with the other parts from your request, but I think I've made enough realistic -- albeit not very dirty -- melee weapons to last anyone for a long time, and I know I'm not the only one.

From just the not that pristine categories:

Hasta (Roman Spear)

Gladius Hispaniensis

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/images/36999-1-1289345626.jpg

Machete Replacer (Darker and rustier version available too.)

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/images/36921-2-1289262542.jpg

Uruk-Hai Blade (Note that there's nothing magical or fantasy inherent there. A wastelander could make one out of sheet metal just as well.)

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/images/38001-1-1290813978.jpg

European Greatsword (You need to copy the 1.01 texture yourself though for it to look like that. The 1.02 one is shiny differential-forged steel.)

Hopefully you can find something usable there :)

And then there's stuff like the halberds which are shiny steel, but are designed to allow easy swapping textures, so pretty much you can just get your favourite rusty metal texture and replace mine with it by simply copying the texture file on top of mine. Heck, even the Epix blades or axe allow that.

Actually I must say, those are quite well done, even if they aren't full of dust, grime, and dirt. I believe I shall download them.

I've gone through the NVNexus a number of times, and I've started using the "Lore-Friendly" tag, as I did not realize that tag even existed. After coming the Nexus for so long (Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, FNV), I feel I should have known ;). I often make unusual characters with odd backgrounds just to give it more flavour as I play. Playing on Hardcore, with high lethality mods and the difficult NPCs, and siding with NCR is easier than doing the same and siding with the Legion. Trying to take down NCR soldiers in Power Armour is a monster on Very Hard. As it should be.

Thanks for linking me to your mods. I appreciate you taking the time to read and respond.
