Item or script that gives a Follower specific commands

Hello! Bit new to modding, but I'm hoping this is possible.

 

I want to control an NPC's movements, specifically a companion. I'd like to hit a button that causes them to move forward. I'm thinking the easiest way to do this would be through hotkey-ing an item or perhaps a script? I have no idea where to start looking for clues on how to do this. Can somebody point me in the correct direction?
