LadyAubrie
I'll start with the usual disclaimer: I'm not sure if this has already been done, but I haven't found anything like this in my search... So... Real estate. There's a lot of houses in Oblivion. There's also (I'm assuming, anyway) a whole lot of normal people in Cyrodiil (and beyond) who, just like a lot of us, have to rent or mortgage their homes. To someone with a little foresight and a lot of capital, this is a really amazing investment opportunity...(in better economies than ours right now, but I'm getting off topic!) The higher my character advances in the game and the more money she makes, the more I wish there were better and better ways to invest that money, to make larger profits. I've seen a lot of people bemoan the lack of money-making opportunity in the game, and I've seen storekeeper and innkeeper and crafting mods to answer this. That's awesome! But that's really small change. What if your character could take, say, 10,000 gold, buy a few shacks in the waterfront, and rent them out to tenants? That character would definitely earn their money back fairly quickly, even with the few occasional expenses that would come with being a landlord/lady. With some of the awesome banking mods out right now (a livesaver for my well-to-do character), you could keep re-investing your capital, and once you earned the money, buy better and better property to rent out. It isn't a big leap to imagine huge real estate empires, owning vast territories, or even easy ways to plugin custom and modded houses/districts/towns... I think this would be an amazing way to make one's fortune in the game, especially for those who don't like to get their hands dirty (or risking their lives) crawling around in zombie-infested catacombs, or for those who aren't satisfied with laboring in their shops just to sell their work for small change. I don't know exactly what would go into a project like this, only that I would love to see it and that, while I'm learning to mod the best I can, it's still a little above my skill level. Any thoughts? :) Edited May 15, 2011 by LadyAubrie
LadyAubrie
Gah! I just realized this should have been in the Mod Request forum. I'm so sorry!!! :( Could someone move it? :)
LegacyCloud
I wouldn't worry about placing your request on this thread, everyone else seems to! With regards to what would be involved, a lot of heavy scripting and little else! Now don't get me wrong, I'm far from being an expert on such things but I think you could set something up like the 'for sale' boards from Fable III, the only problem I can predict is that you would have to limit the renting out arrangement to the NPC who already lives there as so much in the game works with this information. Also, it may be entirely likely that you would need a unique script for each house. Given the number of NPC homes throughout the game this would require a LOT of scripts! Still doesn't mean it's impossible though and I like where you're going with the idea of tying into one of the banking mods. What would be really great is a purpose other than simply making money, after all once you're character has been everywhere, done everything and has more money than sense... what to do with it all? Sure you can buy and rent out properties to make even more money, but to what end? Perhaps you could link this whole thing into a quest where in order to reach the end goal (perhaps an 'ultimate' player home?) the character needs to own all the real-estate. You could also link in a real-estate faction for the character to progress through. Hope this helps, and if I can be of any further help just PM me as I don't check in on these forums too often! LadyAubrie
I think you and I are on the same page. :) I like the idea of adding that kind of scripting to even just a few vanilla houses starting out, and if the mod gets more ambitious, to do more...and I also *love* the idea of a quest and a faction. It sort of gives the user a direction to go in...I know it would be opening a whole other can of worms, but...people with that much money can often buy themselves towns or counties...or at least the title. I know that's getting into the "rule your own domain" mods I've seen hinted at, and that's probably waaaaaaay bigger than what we're talking about. But...maybe a certain amount of management and high finance might not be beyond the scope of this mod? Just a thought. :) Anyways, I like your idea of having a quest to buy up a certain amount of land, and maybe at the end of it you get a *really* awesome house or something. I dunno. Having as much money as you might make with this, you'd also need new and improved ways to spend it! And thanks so much for your response! I'm new at this and it's still really intimidating, but I'll try not to abuse your kindness (or the kindness of others) by pestering them with beginner questions too often. xD (kudos given) Edited May 14, 2011 by LadyAubrie

The Real Neraverine
I'm in favour of this sort of mod. I played something called The Farmer's Mod for Morrowind, and am yet to find a mod that I enjoy as much (although Nehrim is close). It was an economics based mod. You purchase a farm, then upgrade it to a plantation, then buy more land, grow crops, sell it at a profit, etc. As Legacy mentioned it will require a huge amount of scripting. I would recommend as you suggested, starting with just a few shacks. Release it as a BETA and build on it from there.
LadyAubrie
Scary, scary...of all the challenges I've run into in the course of learning to mod, scripting has to be the worst. *rubs head* But...thanks to everyone for their interest...I suppose it's good incentive for me to give this some good honest consideration...:)
