ARRadiaiton
I'm new to the modding seen so bare with me for i am an ultra noob. so i was planning on doing mods for FO4 but i have no idea how people are making clothing items and making them fit for fallout. i've looked on the web for ages but nothing seems to come up with this so i wanted to know how does the community make clothing mods with or without the creation kit. i again apologise for my noobiness. PoliteRaider
What sort of clothing mod are you looking to make? There are two ways that this can be done. Either unique models or retextures. Unique Models are created with a new 3d shape. It may be a modification of an existing model in the game, but the actual structure of it is a new shape. This requires using a 3d Modelling program such as Blender of 3DSMax. This is extremely difficult to do at the moment for Fallout 4 as the 3d models use a new format that isn't exactly the same as the old one but should become much easier after the release of more Fallout 4 specific tools and plugins. I can't really tell you anything more about this since I don't know how to do it myself. Retextures are when you use one of the existing 3d shapes in the game, but change the surface patterns on the object. For a simple example taking a red coat that's already in the game and turning it blue would be a retexture. These require using a graphics program such as GIMP or Photoshop with plugins to work with the .dds file structure used in Fallout 4. Minor changes to the 3d structure are possible, since one of the textures is the 'Normal map' which creates the illusion of changes to the 3d shape, even though it's based on the same mesh. This is useful for making an object look rough like tree-bark or creating a small protrusion like a button or belt. If your retexture is just replacing an original one then it doesn't require any further modification of the game, you simple copy your new textures into the fallout 4 data folder and they'll work. Standalone retextures, making them craftable or purchasable in the game as a new item is quite possible but also requires using FO4Edit to create a new .esp file.
