drakeelvin
I have never done an idle animation; however, I recall seeing them activated by NPC dialog, under the topics entries is where you link them to a sentence of dialog along with the emotion rating. Also, they are used by AI packages, but I've never looked closely at those so I don't know exactly how. The may also be available in quests but I don't recall seeing them there -- mind you I have not spent much time looking at quest objects in detail so I could be wrong. It would definitely be Dialog Topics and AI packages, possibly the Quest, and maybe even some other object, that would enable an NPC to use idle animations. If you want some simple examples how it works for NPC-player dialog you can look at the dialog tree for NPC Cass and find her opening dialog at Mojave Outpost, she uses some hand animations when talking to the player while she's still sitting at her barstool. If you run through those conversations in the game you can see when she animates her hands and you'll know what dialog text to search for: just use the Edit -> Find Text option in GECK and type in her lines where her hands animate, that will locate the dialog entries. nivea
You need to give them a AI package that enables "Sandbox" behavior, that is when they wander around useing idle markers that are placed in game. That is the simple easy way, there are ways to command a NPC to play a single idle on que but its a lot more complicated. larryrathbun
I am having difficulty getting all idles to work. I have set up some idle markers (wall lean, pushup) and those work, the NPC will do them while sandboxing, but I tried to make a custom idle marker (drawing on a blackboard) and it doesn't ever run. I cannot find this idle used anywhere in the game to see how it is supposed to be setup. I figure I am making a very basic mistake, but the tutorials I've seen don't seem to cover this. Any thoughts? Since you said you haven't seen it in the game before, it may be cut content therefore incomplete or broken. However i think ive seen it before, one of the scribes in the hidden valley bunker is giving a class and i believe he uses the chalkboard one. You should find his npc and see how he's triggered to do that animation.

I think there might be one of those writing on board idle animations in Hidden Valley Bunker Lvl 1 in the school room. One of the scribes use it. You may need to copy the animation that isn't working and change the conditions on your copy to get it to play when you want it to. If you've already looked through the idle animations objects and it's not there then you'll need to create a new idle and add conditions, etc to it and then add it to a new idle marker. If you haven't looked through the list of idles in Gameplay > Idle Animations look there first. See if you can find the idle you want to use and check its conditions. If they are the problem and are preventing it from playing when you want it to, then after you create the new one with modified condtiions make a new idle marker and put the newly created idle onto that new idle marker.
