The Lore of Fallout

No really, I really really enjoy the 50s theme fallout has going on.. The music, the cars, the buildings all reminders of one of my favorite eras to see re-enacted.

However, lets face it we are in the year 2281 and everyone knows music realistically evolves like every decade or so, how could it be possible that Frank Sinatra is played some 3 centuries later as if it were brand new?

Don't get me wrong, I love Frank Sinatra but there's some 100 years of artists that (can even be made up) have disappeared into Obscurity.

We know the game is retro-futuristic, sort of the world as the people in the 50s invisioned it, or at least that's what I'm getting out of it in my studies of the history (I never played Fallout 1 and 2) but here's what I'm wondering..

What if music and clothing of the 50s are still around due to the fact that that was all that could be dug up? What if little by little people began finding music from the 60s and up and began playing that while new acts began coming up with new and inventive music.

The A world of Pain Mod seems to have a nice take on that idea with the Ghoul Roach having well over 200 years to experiment with music.

I ask these questions because I'm working on a graphic novel fanfic set after the events of Hoover Dam and I'm trying to be as true to the lore as possible, but I think the 60s-70s also were a great era for music that really would add more flavor to the world. Wandering the Mojave with "Horse with no name" by America playing on your pipboy? Song's from 1970 I believe but still adds a nice touch while "baby love" by Diana Ross and the Supremes give the ladies something to dance and sing along to on the streets of Vegas.

Would it be too far a stretch to make reference to these decades?

What about religion in the world of Fallout? Christianity seems to exist in one form or another, and there are various new religions spread throughout the wastes.

What about Judaism? I don't think the Jews survived Hitler's Holocaust just to be eradicated in the Nuclear one. Of course I'm not sure of Nevada's Jewish population to speculate how many descendants of them would be around, I'm pretty sure that a fallout on the East Coast might work though.

Islam? Huge movement in the 60s among African Americans during the civil rights era.

I'm just speculating here though, some of the subjects may be touchy but I'm trying to be as true to the lore while being creative too.

The premise of fallout is that the events of the 60s, 70s, etc didn't happen in that world the way they did in ours. There doesn't seem to have been a Vietnam War, for example. So probably no CSNY or America. Hippies were probably rounded up and put to the firing squad for all we know :whistling:

Actually that's an interesting tidbit of information there... Mainly because it gives me an idea. I mean the background fluff really isn't all that important but to see a bigger timeline of the changes the culture went through over a span of 100 years would be nice. We have a timeline of wars, but what were the people doing besides signing up for the army and preparing to hide in shelters? lol

And while I know 60s-70s didn't happen as we know them in RL due to it being a parallel universe I'm wondering if some of those events could still be incorporated. The war on terror? Don't really see that happening, though it might add an interesting twist on things with china being a threat to deal with while we're supposed to be hunting Osama Bin Laden, lol.

But one thing that would change it seems is music. I dunno though, just always seems to be something that is forever evolving.

I agree it would, but considering the aesthetic... I'm picturing a bunch of Everly Brothers clones. Nothing out of the box. Nothing to stick it to the man, so rock and roll never gets anywhere. No Beatles, and more sadly, no Stones. If they exist they don't make it to America.

Probably no war on terror or anything like it. McCarthyism is alive and well. Outside cultures are viewed with suspicion, so less immigrants. Foreigners can't go anywhere unwatched, much less able to carry out elaborate terrorist plots.

An America in which 9/11 doesn't happen.. imagine that..

AND OMG Everly brothers.. Hehe, I use them with the NVradioextended mod! ^_^ I think they mentioned somewhere though before fallout New Vegas came out that there was some influence of the 60s thrown in so the beatles actually might not be farfetched. "Horse with no name" By america at least could work despite when it came out simply because of the way it sounds. It's like a campfire song.

Hmm less immigrants aside from the ones that came in during the industrial age and the 20s.. I now wonder what a Fallout NYC would be like. That place has a culture of it's own.

There are mentions of Rock n' Roll (concentration? either concentration or rehab) camps in the earlier games IIRC.

What we have is a USA that bitterly fought social change up until very soon before the nuclear war (where the president was impeached - officially for Jaywalking - over the annexation of canada).

Which also means the Civil Rights act probably never got signed, which gives me some interesting ideas...

Interesting when you think of it. Some presidents likely got voted in due to the way americans thought back than and what that candidate could bring to the country, a people with a different mindset may have never Voted say.. John F. Kennedy in, thus no assassination!

Interesting universe!

I have an idea for a Radio mod, that I'll probably never make or only distribute to some friends. But basically, it would add Radio Stations that play different types of rock in Different forms:

A Rockabilly station in Freesides hosted by an AI similar to Mr. New Vegas

A R&B/Soul/Funk Station based in Westside run by, again, an AI similar to Mr. New Vegas

A folk rock station in North Vegas hosted by, yet again, an AI

A Doo Wop Station in South Vegas Ruins run by, again, an AI.

A Punk Rock Stations run by the fiends

A Hard Rock/Metal station run by the Khans.

A New Wave/Sythpop station ran by a rogue Android.

A Surf Station run out of the NCR Embassy.

Now, some of them are Kinda Lore friendly, but most are not. However, I came up with the idea of a Museum ran by a rock fan. This would explain the histories of the genres and such. But it would also explain why they weren't incredibly popular in Fallout World.
