Hey guys,

I love Nexus so I always make it a point to disable Adblock while on this site, but today a new add appeared that near gave me a heart attack suddenly playing an unpleasant, loud sound and it keeps appearing on most open tabs while browsing mods and additionally it slows down my browser considerably with only 3+ tabs open. It has some street and train on it.

It is possible you are being redirected - NOT by nexus, but by some piece of garbage ware you downloaded that changes how your browser works. The most common I have run into is called Conduit, but it uses other names as well. Many antiviruses don't remove it at all, or not completely so it comes back quickly. I don't know why Google hasn't sued these guys out of existence for stealing ad revenue yet.

You get these from those FREE GAMES!!! type sites, Toolbar installers, Coupon sites, free music sites and other shady type sites. They are automatically downloaded with every download from these kind of places, and are actually 'LEGAL' :wallbash: because buried somewhere in the TOS of those sites it tells you they will be installed if you continue with your installation.

The way they work is to intercept all requests and rout them through their own advertising site - this steals ad revenue from the ligit advertising such as that from Google and slows your browser down. It also opens you to other kinds of malware attack.

Currently the best thing I have found for getting rid of Conduit and similar trash is a small program called JRT (Junkware Removal Tool) It is now owned by Malwarebytes, and is still FREE. It is small, has a minimal interface, id updated almost daily, fairly fast and runs on my computer in about 5 minutes ( 2 - 2TB HD, 1 - 500MB SSD)

Get it here:  Malwarebytes is a legitimate antivirus company and their antivirus is often used by geeks for scanning customer computers.

Also, check your browser preferences to make sure the default home page is not being redirected. :pinch:

I don't think that's the case since it only happens on Nexus and only started today. It also appears in the normal advertisement window (the square one) and is easily blocked by AB+. I've never in my life clicked on any "free games!!" thing or installed an additional toolbar (hate those lol, not happening). My homepage is fine, really nothing is amiss outside of that one loud ad on Nexus. If it's only appearing for me, then I'm puzzled

Thanks for the reply anyhow!

Then perhaps you could take a picture of said ad and send the picture to Robin (Dark0ne) to see into it. Ads are localized, so this bad ad may not be viewed by others.

By the way, is there a way to just pay the 2$ via PayPal to support the Nexus WITHOUT giving out all of my personal data? Because that's the one thing that keeps me from doing that. For all this site does for the players it's sure worth that small donation, but I'm not comfortable with the data sharing...

You're sharing it with PayPal, not the Nexus. Last time I heard it wasn't stored, and all the website actually needs of it is the country you're living in for the VATs calculation. Everything else needn't necessarily be true. But perhaps wait for one of the officials to chime in on this one. I'm just repeating responses I read in the past.

Or you can go search for the topic yourself and read the same responses in the same topics I read as well.

In future please follow the steps below to report the ad properly so Dark0ne is sure to see it and add it to the list he need to bring up with the ad agency.

http://imgur.com/fQMMknE This is how it looks like.

Nexus uses a third party for their advertisements and isn't directly responsible for what ads play. They depend on users to report ads properly so that they can then go to their advert supplier and have the offending ads removed from rotation.

To properly report an offensive or dangerous ad (here's a clue, all three that you mentioned would probably be good candidates for reporting) please use the following steps.

  • Screenshoot the ad and the page it displays on.
  • Click "Contact Us" at the bottom of any page (this assures that the issue goes directly to Dark0ne who is the only one that can contact the ad company or make any other necessary site based changes).
  • Link the screenshot you took, the page you were on and write down any and all reasons for your reporting the ad.
  • Hit send.
  • Be patient, Dark0ne takes ad complaints very seriously but do remember he's dealing with another corporate entity and that sometimes takes time.

Thanks for your understanding and co-operation.

NOBODY believes they could be victimized by these ad hijackers - But many people are. Instead of saying it can't be me because I'm too careful. Please just get the JRT and run it. It's FREE, It's small, it comes from a reputable company, it only takes a few minutes to run. And it works. You can even run it from a USB without ever installing it on your computer.

Why could it just be affecting Nexus? Because the hijacker has targeted the 3rd party advertising supplier that Nexus uses and not some of the companies used by other sites you frequent. And maybe if you just started seeing it today, you just haven't been to some of the other sites that use that ad supplier yet.
