Node Troubles & Building Your Own 1-Piece Armor Sets

OK, I'm a tad annoyed.

 

I cannot understand why certain outfits can only use certain node setups. And that you cannot always combine armor pieces into a single outfit. What gives?

It's a little disheartening to spend all morning modding an outfit to then find it causes a CTD =/

 

Could someone please point me in the direction of some info on how to tell which setup will work?

Ideally, I'd just like a simple template that I could build all my clothing/armor mods around.
