sirjohn45
Ok i am hoping someone can help me with this. There is a mod I am using and the person who made the mod was banned from Nexus. Now the question....How can I use the ammo and rifle in his mod for my game without having this mod active?I was thinking all i had to do was rename them but if someone can help I would appreciate it,and If I ever did use it I would give the person credit. Thanks everyone this site is awesome and a lot of you are very friendly and helpful...John
deu58
If you intend to do a release of this mod then you still need that persons permission to use or you may find yourself banned. Changing names would not make any difference. Many people can recognize their own work if you are using their meshes and textures even with different names. Many modders get permission from other modders to use their textures and meshes in their mods. For instance you are using Stans super guns mod because it is no longer supported and Stan is long gone from the community. You use meshes and textures from his defunct mod and post them here on nexus. Now Harry the Blender master catches word that there is a new mod made by you that uses meshes and meshes that sure look familiar and he down loads the mod and low and behold you are using meshes that he gave stan permission to use but he never gave you permission. He contacts the powers that be here and your mod goes into the holding tank to be investigated for using assets with out permission. You may have to get permission from several different people just to use the assets of one defunct mod. That said after you have their permission, My own way is I use two computers. I open their mod on one computer and I make a new plug in on the other. Any BSA stuff I need from their mod I extract using FOMM's BSA tool. I build my plug and using the editor templates I make paths to the meshes and textures I want to use. You can extract the BSA stuff and put them in the stand alone mesh and texture folders that are in the Data folder which is what I usually do or you can create your own custom bsa which I have never done yet but I do not think it would be that difficult to do really if that is what you want to do. There are probaby simpler ways I know people talk about merging plugs etc but I myself have never really tried that. There may also be a way to do it using FNVedit but again I myself have not tried that either but some people do a lot of their editing with FNVedit. If that approach interests you type "FNVedit manual" into the google search and that will bring up the link to the NEXUS page that has an excellent PDF manual that covers in detail all the editing stuff you can do with FNVedit
sirjohn45
thanks for that and this mod would be for me only no sharing until such time as I can find this guy and see if he would mind me using them then I might. But I was just needing a how to of getting the textures and meshes so I can use them in my own game, I am not about stealing someone elses work unless I talk to them first. I just wanted to work on it alone for my own use :)thanks for all your help. Is there a how to the easy way for a beginner :) Edited May 25, 2011 by sirjohn45
deu58
thanks for that and this mod would be for me only no sharing until such time as I can find this guy and see if he would mind me using them then I might. But I was just needing a how to of getting the textures and meshes so I can use them in my own game. Look in the mod and see if there is a mesh folder and a texture folder. If not then there should be a BSA. If there are none of those then he is using meshes and textures that are already included in the GECK. You ask about creating textures in the other thread but I will answer here. You cannot create textures in the GECK. What you do is create textures using Nifscope and meshes in Blender and then import them into the GECK for you to use. That is what I meant above about one mod using several peoples assets to make one mod. Lots of Modders know the GECK but Nifscope and Blender is more of a specialty type of modding. So a GECK modder will post looking for a mesh/texture modder to use their work. Happened to me a few weeks ago. The texture I wanted to use on an item was available in the GECK and I thought I was good to go. I get my item in the game and pick it up and so far so good. So now I drop the item and poing it just floats in the air. Well that sucked! Turns out this item has no havoc physics. To add that you need to know how use Nifscope which is a pretty complicated tool if you have never used it before. Fortunatly for me Chuck Steele is a NIfscope modder and had modded the havoc into very mesh I needed and he gave me permission to use it in my mod as long as I give credit where credit is due. So when I am ready to actually add that item to my mod I will mention him in the read me and give credit and thanks. There is a Blender and a Nifscope forum here at NEXUS. If you need something done or you want to learn those tools you can drop down there and see what is going on. Be advised though tools like Blender take a lot of time to get good at.
