Help with setting up NMM

So I haven't used NMM for a good amount of time, but I just recently got it installed since I want to get back into Skyrim and mod it again. I noticed a lot has changed and I'm a bit confused about some of the new settings. It's actually the whole Virtual mod install setup section, I know what the Mod Directory and Install Info do. The reason why I'm asking about this is I use 2 different drives. I have a SSD and a HDD, Skyrim is installed on the SSD and how I use to set everything up was the Mod Directory and Install Info was saved to the HDD to help keep the SSD free, while the mods where actually installed in the Skyrim folder on the SSD. What does the Virtual mod install setup do? Should I leave it defaulted to the SSD like it wants? If I move it to the HDD does that move where the mods are actually installed to?
