(Mostly modded) NPCs skipping dialogue

I've had this recurring problem(in both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, but I've long since stopped playing Fallout 3) with NPCs rapidly skipping lines of dialogue.

For example, I'll go up to an NPC that is supposed to say some sort of voiced over greeting. Instead of the game playing the voice and giving me time to read the dialogue, it flashes it for a second and then moves on to the next line of dialogue or prompts me for a conversation choice.

The mod I'm having trouble with lately is the New Vegas Bounties II mod, but I figured I would post it here since this problem isn't isolated to that mod.

Tried google searching relevant terms, searching that mods thread, etc, couldn't find anything. If anyone knows what the problem is, might be, or somewhere else I can look for more information or help, I'd greatly appreciate it :)

  • 6 months later...

I know posting to a zombie thread is bad form, but I recently reinstalled FNV and began getting the exact problem described in this post, so I thought I'd post my problem here to reinforce the issue.

None of my computer settings have changed since my last play through 2 months ago, and I'm fairly sure that I had all of the same DLCs then as I do now. It worked fine (as fine as FNV can, anyway) 2 months ago, but it does not work now.

The problem I am having is, as soon as I get out of Doc Mitchell's house, I see Victor rolling down the road and I go to speak to him...

He will speak some of his lines, but others won't get spoken, and the text for those line that should be spoken will flash up on the screen for a split second, before going back to the dialogue topic menu. It's acting like my mouse button is stuck, but that can't be the problem, because that would cause system wide weirdness.

The dialogue skipping happens with every NPC I encounter, (except Doc Mitchell at the beginning of a game, strangely), but it is intermittent. Each time I talk to an NPC, different parts of the NPC's dialogue will be spoken or skipped (so I know the audio files are there), and the lines of dialogue act like they are being 'clicked through' by a ghost in the system. All other in-game sounds play normally (well, as normally as sound play in FNV).

When I first reinstalled the game I loaded it with mods, but when I finally started a game I noticed this problem happening. I tried to identify the mod that was the culprit, but after a long process I finally resorted to deleting the entire "...\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas" folder and then reinstalling the game from steam. However, the problem continues to occur with the unmodded game. Note, I also deleted the FalloutNV directory in the "C:\Games" directory and in "...\My Documents\My Games\"

It is possible, I suppose, that the problem is in one of the .ini files, as one of the mods I originally had installed may have changed it, but I'm pretty sure I deleted both of them. Is there a line in the .ini file that modifies dialogue speed or some other setting that might cause the effect I've described? Or, alternatelty, is it possible that Lonesome Road, Gun Runner Arsenal, and/or Courier's Stash is the culprit? I may not have had all of those the last time I ran the program.

What are the locations of the .ini files, and how many of them are there? I believe there are only 2, one in "...\My Documents\My Games\FalloutNV", and one in "...\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas". Is that correct?

Also, does anyone happen to know what keystrokes will advance dialogue? I know the left mouse button does, but what others? I need to make sure I don't have a stuck key or something like that.

I sure hope someone out there can help me out, although based on the lack of response to the OP, I am not hopeful.

I have this thing too. Also thought my mouse key was stuck, but nope, it wasn't. I don't suppose either of you found a solution?

I don't have any mods or DLCs, and tried starting a new game. I didn't have this problem before though it was months since I played the last time.

To close out the ticket, so to speak, I resorted to completely reformatting my drive and installing a new version of windows 7.

That fixed it.

I suspect there was something less drastic that could have worked, but this was the last straw for me for XP, and I wanted a 64bit operating system.
