xforce11
Hi I can't figure out if this perk (better criticals - makes the crits hit harder, on rank 3 a crit hits x4) works only for VATS, or even if I use the drug Overdrive. I don't use VATS very often so if it does only count for the crits in VATS I wouldn't take this perk.Anyone knows if this perk works "outside" of VATS? I mean, you can still perform critical hits with the Overdrive drug.
kevkiev
I'm guessing that it does, but only on sneak attacks. (I've never done Overdrive so don't know about that.) Perhaps a bit embarrassing, but it took me ages to notice the "press space bar to execute critical" thing in VATS, and before that point I noticed that, in the "Stats/ Combat" portion of my pip boy, my number of critical attacks exactly equaled my number of sneak attacks (I never use VATS when sniping). It was only after I started pressing space bar in VATS to execute criticals that the former number started to exceed the latter one. So, yeah, it seems that outside of VATS you still get a critical on sneak attacks like in previous FO games so, based on that, I'm guessing that the perk also applies. (I'd taken the Better Criticals perks before I figured that all out, from force of habit from previous FO games.) However, oddly enough, I honestly can't remember if I ever got the "critical strike on...." pop-up during a non-VATS sneak attack .
xforce11
Hm... my problem is that I don't even use sneaking with my character, I am using the minigun (with some kind of tank / power armor build) all the time and it's weapon damage is pretty low, especially if you play on surival difficutly, it takes like 200 rounds with a normal minigun (no legendary) to take down a raider veteran or even more rounds for a supermutant primus. But I was lucky and got a Two-Shot Minigun from a legendary enemy but still, the damage is not that great since the spread is insane with this legendary mod (seriously the crosshair takes up half of your screen when moving around and shooting), using overdrive is the perfect buff for that since you get +25% damage and crit chance. IF the better criticals perk does affect these crits damage the minigun would be even more useful since you spray many bullets and every single one has a 1/4 chance to land a crit. And it's pretty interesting that sneak attacks count as critical hits too, I did not know that before and thought that would be two different things. kevkiev
Interesting. Again, and only based on my criticals number equaling my sneak numbers until I started intentionally executing criticals in VATS, I'd guess that you don't get criticals outside of VATS on a non-sneak attack. I rarely used VATS at all, for sniping or just in-your-face combat, for quite a long time. (Really, not up until I started taking the Critical Banker/ Four Leaf Clover/ Grim Reaper Sprint perks.) I had a few thousand total kills at the time I noticed the criticals=sneak numbers in my pip-boy. If I'd gotten a critical on some of my non-VATS and non-sneaking kills up to that point, I'm thinking that the odds of criticals equalling sneaks would be astronomically low. PhoenixKnight13
I rarely use VATS unless I'm surrounded, even then I'll typically use Bullet Time instead (despite being an old school Fallout fan I just don't like the VATS system in 3 & 4, being stuck in killcam mode irks me too)... However, using Old Style Criticals my sneak attacks regularly crit for 6.3x damage (all sneak/crit attack related perks like Sandman are maxed) outside of VATS. Not sure if that changes while using VATS or not, but it's definitely not dependent on VATS. I crit fairly often; my luck being maxed out for triggering the OSC mod, base SPECIAL + gear at 20 luck = 20%. You get a notice on your HUD whenever it goes off and the majority of my kills are sneak attacks, so yeah. Non-sneak crits are usually noticable via bloody mess and/or piles of goo/ash.Hope that helps. On another note, answering this post inspired me to do a quick search and found this...(might also help the OP here)http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1064/?
