Generating Object LOD problem

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to make custom objects visible from a large distance by generating objects in the World LOD menu in the GECK. I tried following the instructions from this tutorial:

http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php/World_LOD

But it isn't working out that great. The object is generated, but it looks wrong. Basically, it's just a translucent mesh with no texture. When I'm up close, I can see the object just fine, (because it's the actual object, and not the lod). But when I walk far away, it only shows as this sort of see-through, texture-less version of that mesh. Plus, I can only see it in 3rd person view. When I switch to 1st person, it just doesn't show anything at all.

Anyone think they might know what the deal is, and how to fix it?

LOD Generation Essentials Pack

This is how I learned, specific pieces are missing, and some of bethesda's lod dds files are to complex to render.

You will not be able to do the capital wasteland lod. Only your own worldspace.

If you did try to redo CWasteland it may take days to do, and you have to delete/override the stock blocks

it is just to much.

LOD is all or none, you cannot generate single cells.

I was wondering, is it required for me to have everything under the "Bethesda Softworks" folder? Cuz I didn't install my game in the standard folder (I have windows vista, and I changed the install folder so I didn't have to deal with all the security crap). Basically, it's under "My Documents\Games\Fallout3" etc. So does it need to be in the Bethesda Softworks folder to work properly?

Hello!

Good question all it said was OUTside fallout3 folder for the Source folder

So for you it would be C:\Games\Source

Documents folder is also protected by windows.

The best place and all agree is, C:\Games\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout3

or D:\Games\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout3 or

E:\Games\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout3 ect...

The best Tutorial and prepackaged resources:

LOD resources

LOD Resources a few pieces are missing.

so just grab - search the data folder for all the nif and DDS with LOD in their name. After you expand the BSA's to you HDrive.

Use IrfanView to change (batch processing) the DDS to TGA's or paintNET.

a lot to setup, but it works fine here. Oh and save the alpha data.

The capitol building lod files say to complex to render "over 1000 verts or somesuch"

try simplifing nif... but i do not know how yet.

  • 6 years later...

Okay, so I know this is a very old thread, but I am trying to generate object LOD, and I get the error that "some dds files for Cube.001 are missing. Check the editor warnings file for more info." the problem is that line is the only thing that shows up in the warning file. I don't know what files are missing, and I can't find any fixes for it. Any ideas on how to fix this, so I can generate LOD? It's the last thing I need to do to finish the mod.
