Please forbid the uploading of '.ini mods'.

Every system is unique, no single .ini configuration can anticipate the quirks of every hardware / mod combination ever made. In the end it's rarely the ini mod 'author' that responds to solve all these resulting issues, if it is at all clear at that point they were even caused by an .ini mod. Most of them will eventually have to be solved by the community, once the user that downloaded it discovers Bethsoft tech support for all intends and purposes doesn't exist.

If there is one thing years of modding and tweaking have taught me, it's that there's no such thing as a 'peak performance' setting anyway. You set things too low or too high, random stuff breaks that you can't always predict or understand, short term. Vanilla configurations exist for a reason, which never had anything to do with game performance. They're just the collection of settings least likely to cause problems for the largest amount of people, which is a very good thing. Gamers should either learn what all the settings in .ini files are about before changing them, or stick to vanilla configurations.

Please, I implore you to save us the future headaches of trying to get to the bottom of all resulting tech support questions of people who didn't really want to get invested in advanced settings in the first place. Stop allowing these types of mods on Nexusmods or at the very least put out some kind of compulsory big neon warning before people can download them.

That is all.

There are warnings, but the kind of people who think a pre made ini file will fix their game - or make it run better are the same people that just don't read - They don't read warnings, they don't read instructions, they don't read readmes, they don't read the feedback for the ini. They just refuse to read. You cannot make them read. I know because We have tried for years. Look at my sig.

I have learned to allow them to screw things up as that is the only way to make them believe that maybe we do know something that they don't. Sometimes it even leads them to actually read. :whistling:

But why even allow these uploads then? They aren't even mods, when you get right down to it. User created game content isn't the same thing as a user tweaked setting.

It just seems to me like the community would be better off without the trouble these mods cause.

While I do agree these are not mods, they are files, and that is what we support here. Not just mod files. Programs such as FO4Edit are not mods either, but they are files we support.

I do agree that pre made ini files are really dumb, and the people that think there are some magic ini settings that Beth doesn't know about or won't let them have for some reason are deluded. But as I said - they refuse to read.

There are files that explain ini settings and make suggestions. The problem is with the kiddies that actually believe they know more about how an ini should work than the people that made the game and think their ini that they worked out on their computer is the ini that everyone else must use to get the same result they are getting. Even if the user has a potato with a integrated Intel video system.

I did post a warning on his file. But my guess is he will either PM me to argue, or remove the warning - If he removes it - that will get him an official warning the first time, and a ban if he persists. Since he knows so much about computers I think I might reply to any whining in Octal (base 8 used on old computers) to see just how computer literate he really is.
