zymurgy65
I've been playing Oblivion with no problems for a long time now, but yesterday on start-up I received a message telling me OBSE wasn't installed, even though I knew it was. I closed the game and reinstalled OBSE just to be on the safe side, but start-up resulted in an immediate CTD. Re-installing the game (even with no mods) still results in a CTD every time. This has never happened before, and I have no idea how to fix it. Any suggestions?
Legotrash
Did you upgrade your obse or something? What changed?
zymurgy65
No, it's v21, same as I was using before. I switched to Windows 10 from 8.1 a couple of weeks ago, but the game still worked afterwards. Come to think of it, the problem appeared immediately after I installed the latest version of the UOP, with the "Windows has stopped working" message popping up. I don't see how it could be that, though. I've been installing to the default Program Files folder; maybe if I use another folder that will help. Sorry that I'm AFK for so long. I don't have an internet connection at home so I can only go online at the library. Also, I live in the UK, which puts me in a different time zone to many of you. zymurgy65
Further to my last post, I've tried re-installing to two different folders and I'm still getting an immediate crash on start-up. Has anyone else had problems using Oblivion with Windows 10? I can't think of any other reason for the game to suddenly stop working.
Legotrash
When you're troubleshooting always take small, careful steps. In this case, Install the game exactly the way you did when it was working. This also means the same versions about everything, including UOP. Only then we'll be on a good way to track the problem down. If it'll work out for you, then change one or two things at a time (change and test). Even if something goes wrong, you'll be able to track the problem easily. :) Installing in a different folder than program files is a good thing but I don't know if there's a point to it in newer versions of windows. I have vista so I have no clue about windows 10. :/
zymurgy65
Well, I finally fixed the problem - it was Windows 10! After reverting to 8.1 and uninstalling (again!), the next reinstallation did the trick.
Legotrash
That's good to know, well done on finding out the culprit!I wouldn't trade Oblivion for a newer windows version either btw.
Surilindur
Just for reference, in case someone happens to read this thread, I am actually playing Oblivion on Windows 10 with OBSE and lots of mods at the moment. Also Mod Organizer for installing them. The same mods were there also in Windows 7, and it works now, too. There were some issues, but I did manage to get it working after a while. Verifying game cache via Steam was also something I did, but I am not really convinced of that solving the thing, though it did redownload some files. And I am still not sure why the game did not work straight away. The main point was that Oblivion does work with Windows 10. Not trying to get anyone to upgrade, just pointing that one out. Who knows where the Microsoft train will go. Infernal furnace with an entry fee of one soul and PC gaming as a concept comes to mind. I still have my Windows 7 both backed up and on another partition so I can return to it when Microsoft goes nuts. And then there is Linux with some emulators, maybe. Edited March 31, 2016 by Contrathetix
zymurgy65
That's worth knowing. I'm not that computer-savvy and I'm not online, so Steam isn't an option for me. I'm just happy to be playing again!
