advice and mod recommendations for new player

Recommended Posts

So far, ALL of my PC gaming experience can be summed up as a lot of modded Oblivion, some Akia online, and Vindictus.

I have heard great things on the Witcher 2, and am going to be buying it in the next couple of days. As an Oblivion player, what should I expect or not expect (other than no fast travel). What type of build is most optimized? and other newbie questions like that. I have heard that the tutorial outright SUCKS and that the inventory is the same. are there mods that fix these problems? if so, where can I find them? thanks in advance for your replies.

Don't expect a game that can be as heavily modded as Oblivion. Mods can be downloaded from http://www.witchernexus.com/

The tutorial isn't that bad, certainly no worse than Two Worlds 2, and if you are playing through for a second or third time you can always right click the cut-scenes to skip them. Any build is as good as your ability to play that type of character, Swordsman, Battle-Mage, or Junkie.....ie Alchemist/potion freak  although you will use a certain amount of all paths irrespective of what build you make.

Whereas in games like Ob, it is possible to complete all quests reguardless of what decisions you make, Witcher 1 & 2 are very different, in that any decision you make has real consequences later in the game, so it is possible to have numerous replays and get different results every time ( there are apparently 16 different possible endings) so if, as some say, the game takes approx 40 hours to complete, that will give you a minimum of 640 hours to get all the endings. Add to that the fact that there are also 4 different beginnings which are available dependent on your choices in the first game, as you get the opportunity to import some of the characteristics and equipment from Witcher 1 saves...... something I have never come across before, being able to transfer between 2 different stand-alone games.....using different engines to boot! I guess you could expect to get even more gameplay out of it.

PS. IMHO Morrowind was a far better game than Oblivion.

I've got a couple of new questions too...like the Op, i'm new to the Witcher games, coming from Oblivion and FO3...

1. Is there a house or a place where Geralt can dump some of his crap? i'm getting tired of scrolling through 5000 items.

2. Do Geralt keep leveling up until the end game or is there a limit?

3. just how modable is this game? will you be able to create a completely new armors and weapons or will it be limited to re textures?

muchos gracias in advance.

There is no storage in the game what so ever, To the best of my knowledge Geralt does keep leveling throughout the game, the re-spawn is minimal I've found a couple of caves that re-spawn Nekkers but that's about it, so the amount of XP for leveling is limited to how many quests you complete and the number of kills. At present there is limited modability but hopefully sometime in the future a tool kit will be released as happened with Witcher 1.

Yikes! no storage space whatsoever? you guys sure?

Man...that means only option is to find someplace and just drop 'em and retrieve 'em later i guess. But if you do this for example on act 1..you'll lose 'em on act 2...hmmm

So far, this game has been outstanding! the battle on Vergen kicks mucho culo's!!

Only complaints i have so far are the lack of storage space...and the damn invisible walls!

Oh..and no respawn too? i thought the herp..i mean the harpies respawn. Guess i was wrong then.

And level 35 is fine by me.

I found that the Nekkers still re-spawn in the cave under the waterfall and also the cave near the Harbor even after destroying the nests, the XP is minimal though 4-5 per kill but at least you can harvest stuff to sell on or make potions from.

I'm not sure if dropping items to retrieve later works, once an item has been in your inventory and subsequently dropped, then I believe the game engine flags it as not required and will "clean" it out when you leave the cell, thus you'd lose it. I have noticed though that if you don't pick up a stash you can often find it later.
