Where to get started making my own mods?

I'd like to know a bit about making my own Skyrim mods- after seeing the sheer amount of awful permissions on what would otherwise be good mods, I'd like to start making my own under fair permissions. I have viewed some pages on the Wiki already, particularly about making armor. What does the community here think are some essential resources to get started with modding Skyrim?

(I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong section; this is honestly my first post on the forums here)

What is your skill set? I'm a life long self taught sketch artist and a while ago I decided to start breaking into the digital domain (as far as art goes) and I started learning photoshop and other programs. I also learned a little about 3D modeling and animation too, so for me it wasn't a big leap to start making objects (weapons, armor, clothing, potions, and other clutter items) for Skyrim. I'm also trying to learn scripting, but having no previous programming skill/experience I'm having a rough time of things right now, but if you have that skill set that might be a good place for you to start.

Also, what kind of mods do you want to make? Just because you existing skill set doesn't lend itself to any particular aspect of modding (if that is the case) doesn't mean you can't acquire new skills.

I would recommend starting with creating your own follower, build a home/dungeon, or just tweaking some values in CK first.

If you are more the 3d type, try retexturing armor weapons etc. it gets you familiar with Nifskope and the 1001 nif parameters ;)

if you are into programming, do the hello world tutorials and go from there.

Bethesda actually has some graat vids on Youtube, but also many others on every topic, and there is this forum!

I'm going to ignore the part where you put in question the permission conditions authors put in their work and answer the question.

More that skillset i'd say it really depends on what you like, what mods do you want to make. Followers, new villages, custom armor or weapons, retextures, scripting stuff... theres thousand possibilities.

I actually started adding some aliens in the starting village of fallout new vegas then moved to 3d modelling and textures.

Just think about what you want to do, get the tools you need for that, watch some tutorials and jump into it. The best way to learn something is to do it.

For creationkit i'd recommend : http://www.creationkit.com/Category:Tutorials

But there's a bunch on youtube.

Ah, I am also a self-taught sketch artist- my friends and my teacher in art class back in high school said I was great with fine details. Also, I am currently in college studying to be a programmer, so scripting may be eased up a bit for me. I'd like to start out making some weapon and armor sets. I have the Creation Kit, as well as the NIF tools and Blender 2.49, which I've read is required to make the NIF plugins work.

Here is a link to a good, thorough 'how to make armor' tutorial, It's long though and I haven't finished it all yet, but so far so good!

Here's a link to a video on how to make custom weapons that I found somewhat helpful, although the author does go really fast and I think he probably should have slowed down to elaborate on some things, I was able to follow this video to make my first mod which was a sword mod.

Here are a couple more weapon tutorial vids to help;

Here is a video that shows how to export things from blender and get them set up in NifSkope;

Also there are some tutorials posted in this form too. Hope this helps!

Just wanted to add that 3ds max 2012 is an alternative to blender, there is a nif plugin for it that works for armor and weapon exporting. And imo is better, but in the ends it depends on what interface and workflow you feel more confortable with, i did start with blender but soon moved to 3dsmax.

And there are great skyim-related tutorials for 3dsmax.

For skinning of armors i learned from this tutorial: https://youtu.be/L40qoiuUXL4

The author, so much monsters, has some other great tutorials and on the part two of the one i posted theres a link to a plugin that makes the weight slider thing automatically.

Thanks, but I'm going to guess that only that last link is going to be of significant help, as I don't have 3DS Max (it's really expensive, to say the least)- but, I thank you for being thoughtful, and I'll check out that last link.

I read somewhere that Blender 2.49 is only necessary for the import/export, you work with the latest and greatest and just do the IO thing with 2.49. Was a while I read this though, can't remember where.

True, that's what I meant by it being needed for the NIF plugins to work- I have the newest Blender installed for actually making the models, but I have the old 2.49 for import/export.
