FPS Issues

Recommended Posts

Ok so Im running the steam copy of fallout 3 goty edition on my laptop. I have in the past been able to run it fairly high graphics settings on my little beast, but I recently did a fresh install to put some new mods on etc... and I cant get a decent FPS if my life depended on it. The fallout.exe is large address aware, I have the fose no stutter plugin installed, the improved cell buffer purge mod, and I was so desperate I tweaked the fallout_default.ini to see if it would improve performance (I have a back up of both the .ini and .exe) None of this seems to help. Any thoughts or ideas to help me out? Much thanks!

P.S.

My laptop has 8 GB Ram, a GeForce GTX 260m, and an intel i7 Q720 @ 1.6GHZ.

Get rid of this, PurgeCellBuffers.esp, and that stupid LAA junk. Delete your .ini config files, an let it auto detect an leave that alone for now.

Smooth physics and animation should be your priority. If you want it to look real, don't... That's just stupid nowdays, the shark has been jumped.

The tweekguide can get you into just as much trouble as it saves you. You probalby don't even need Purge Cell Buffers either in a mod or manually commanded.

Disable AA an AF via the launcher or FOMM if you gota have AA an AF force them via the nvidia control panel,

Though you only need AF 2X-4X depending on your screen (use native), AA is pretty useless if you must have it then force it via the Override any application setting

(just for this game an Vegas everything else let the 3D applicaiton decide) You can also set your texture filtering to high performance.

The sliders are pretty wack, the distance factor is 4 times more than other games, so set the distance sliders at 1/4 of what you normally would.

Water settings Full Scene Reflections and Full Detail Reflections are a big waste of power. Shadows are only on the characters an are very stupid, better without them.

It would be great if you didn't have those mods installed an ran a test on the vanilla game, but you're way past that, now you know better.

You should limit your cores to only two, this is done by adding a command in the .ini, you'll have to look that up at the end of the tweek guide.

i7 is 4 core wit HT, meaning it's really a simulated 8 core or 5 idk, really you could limit it to just one, lol. Fallout 3 favors using the advanced options in your Nvida control panel.

The problem is that you will have to figure out which ones to use that run well. You should also start a new game when you get a problem an see if it still does it.

Probably force Vsync off, an Tripple buffering as well. You could try forcing threaded optimzation. And also you could try letting your CPU take care of physics rather than your GPU this is because Non SLI systems do both on the same card, but you actually have extra CPU which might yeild better results so change PhysX to CPU an see wad it do.

It is possible to CTRL ALT DELETE out of the game if you press load an are viewing the load screen, from there you can use the task manager to set the priority for fallout 3 to high or realtime. This would allow more CPU to be used by the application, and also you could set the afinity which is how many cores it uses. Also the GOTY edition gets patched to 1.7 even though it's already 1.7 because it fixes some issues.
