So I was reading the UESPWiki regarding Soul Trapping and Enchantments / Recharging and came up with an idea that would modify soul trapping. Now I searched the forums and files and couldn't find anything like what I'm about to present which makes me think it might be impossible. Anyways, here goes:

 

The way in which higher level soul gems are wasted if lower level souls are trapped into them seems frustrating, like trying to efficiently level your character by getting the +5 bonuses or waiting to perform quests at higher levels to get better items (both of which have great mods that correct this annoying (imo) "micromanagement").

 

Can a similar thing be done with soul gems, in that rather than filling a gem with a soul, it fills it with the points instead? That is to say, if I trap a lesser soul in my greater soul gem, I've obviously wasted a lot of possible enchantment points - so this mod would allow more souls to be trapped in that gem up to the maximum point capacity of the gem. Any overflow would go into the next available gem, unless no other unfilled gems are present in which case those overflow points would be lost. The mod could start by checking the lowest value gems for available space first, working its way up to higher value gems until the number of gems checked is exhausted. Just something I came up with and would like to know if it's possible or already done - seems like a more intuitive way of trapping souls and would make recharging a bit less frustrating.

No, it is not, most of the systems used for soul trapping, enchanting are hard coded and cannot be modified or scripted with. Soulgems themselves only come in the various grades, without any values between. While the values of the various grades can be changed, nothing would allow you to keep trapping to the same soulgem until its filled. While you could technically remove both the new unfilled gem, and one already in the inventory, then adding one of a grade higher and an empty, the script itself would probably be very difficult to make so that it only detects gems collected from soultrapping, and not from just picking them up. Additionally, such a script would spam the player with several messages every time it happened, and probably slow down performance greatly every time it checked for soul gems.

 

Really, the system with soulgems was setup the way it is so that the player can't just grab a grand soulgem at low levels, kill a few rats to get it filled to maximum, then enchant something. Whereas normally you would have to wait till higher levels to find anything that can fill that gem. It's basically another way of making it so that you can't just get some sort of super weapon right away, but instead have access to stronger and stronger weapons as time goes on. If you could enchant something that high at level 1, you have nowhere else to really go enchanting wise for the remainder of the game.
