If you're worried about possible overwrite, you can always manually install a mod as follows keeping in mind one very important thing.

File structure for any given mod must be kept. Let's say you have the Armors of Gaia mod, which has a file structure Data/meshes/armor/SBelven/Gaia1 and Gaia2, and for the textures the structure is Data/textures/armor/SBelven/Gaia1 and Gaia2. (Icons would be Data/textures/menus/icons/SBelven/Gaia1 and Gaia2). This means that in order for this mod to work, you have to have that exact structure within your Oblivion data folder. So, your Oblivion Data folder must contain within it a folder called meshes. The meshes folder must have a folder within it called armor. Inside the armor folder you have to have a folder called SBelven, and inside that there must be two folders called Gaia1 and Gaia2, and inside those folders are the files themselves The textures will follow the same order, but will be in the textures folder instead of the meshes folder. This is exactly how it must look in your Oblivion directory to get the mod to work, because that is exactly how it looks when you open the mod.

If multiple mods use the same names for certain folders, all applicable files for those mods will get placed in the same folder within your Oblivion/Data folder. Just be careful to read the exact name of the folders in the mod. Some mods have a folder called "Icons". Others have a folder called "Icon". This is NOT the same folder, and so you would have to have two folders in your Oblivion data directory. One called Icon, and one called Icons.

Either way, that is the best way I can explain it. If you google Oblivion mod install, you should also find some helpful tutorials on how to do it as well.
