Start by telling us where you installed Oblivion. Did you let it install to the default Program Files?

i installed it do my D drive. the C drive is just for my windows. its a SSD drive and only 60 gbs. i know i may have to increase size soon but not yet anyway for windows. is installing on D drive a mistake?

I'm not really sure about that (I'm not that much of a tech-person  ), but it should be fine.

Do you have "mod installing software" like OBMM, BOSS, or WryeBash?

Also, how often are the CTD's occurring and when? Do they happen when you launch the game, at specific points, or are they simply random?

Well i have OBMM and BOSS. the crashes have been at the very beginning so far. i cant even get past the prison section. its random. sometimes not bad sometimes terrible.

A few troubleshooting tips could include:

Not launching it using OBSE/OBSE not put in proper folder

Load order in wrong

Mod incompatibility

Try disabling all mods and see if it still returns you to your desktop upon doing an OBSE launch. If it lets you play the game you know it has to be a mod, and if not make sure OBSE is in the correct folder. Try only adding a few mods at a time and run your game after every couple of mods are checked off. When you next get a crash find out which mod you recently added. Good luck and I hope you get your game running soon

I guess OBSE is the oblivion game?

OBSE.exe is the launcher for the script extender. You have to click it to run your game with mods which could not have normally been made within the games default ability. If you don't have it but are using mods that require it that could be a reason you are crashing. OBSE can be found here and is simple to install as long as you read the "read-me" :)
