Companion - Attack nearest target / automatic aggression?

Companions seem to wait until they(or you) are attacked before they are willing to attack an enemy. Codsworth won't chop a ghoul unless the ghoul swats or lunges first. A gun-toting companion will ignore a bloatfly until the fly actually starts shooting at you. A melee companion will dutifully stand by your side, even if they are getting shot repeatedly by an enemy 10 yards away.

You can select your companion and force them to attack something, but this is way too clunky to do quickly (especially how the game helpfully locks your mouse control in place after selecting your companion). Also, companions commanded toward a distant enemy will go forth to 'inspect' it rather that attack it. I'd rather they inspect the target though the scope and then with a bullet.

So I ask, is there any way to mod in a feature that would fix this? Something like:

-A script that would force your companion to attack the nearest enemy (or any detected enemy)

-Increase the aggro distance, and the distance the companion is willing to stray from you before returning.

-Adjust a companion attribute that will make them fight enemies by default. Like how regular NPCs engage enemies right away. (Pre-companion Danse doesn't need any coaxing to mow down enemies on sight).

I tried figuring this out by messing with character attributes and faction assignments, but only succeeded in breaking some companions and making them unavailable. I'd really appreciate if someone had a better idea for making something like this work.

Thanks

EDIT: I just noticed that 'setav 000002bc 0/1/2/3' (agression) will do this for NPCs, but alas, does not seem to affect the companion.
