Freesync requires a compatible graphics card...if your machine is so old that it doesn't have DisplayPort it very likely doesn't support Freesync as a result. You also cannot adapterize DVI to DisplayPort (as in, DVI output to DisplayPort input); it only works the other way (DP->DVI). On some very new Freesync monitors, HDMI is supported with a compatible graphics card (https://www.amd.com/Documents/freesync-hdmi.pdf) however this is a brand new feature.

See here for a list of supported graphics cards:

https://support.amd.com/en-us/search/faq/219 (note there is a difference between supporting Freesync as a power saving mode and "dynamic frame rate control in games" which is only supported by a subset of GCN parts)

I would suggest comparing your PC against the AMD Freesync system requirements, and if it is not listed as compatible (and if it doesn't offer DisplayPort out, it likely is not), returning the monitor (if still possible). "Freesync" and "G-Sync" and not required for vertical sync or higher-than-60hz refresh rates, however, so if that's your goal there's plenty of options (and its entirely possible whatever monitor you bought is a fine option for that too, but if you paid extra specifically for Freesync and can't use it, I'd vote "money back" if that's a choice). Finally, do keep in mind that a lot of the games that are most popular here (e.g. Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, etc) are designed with a 60 FPS cap in mind - they can certainly be run at higher frame-rates, but the physics will come off the rails and you will experience more frequent crashes and glitches as you go over 60 FPS, so its generally much safer to just vsync or use FRTC to keep things at 60 FPS. This is not, at least in my experience, a common problem though - lots of other games have no problems being run >60 FPS.
