My installed mods so far...how am I doing?

Hello, I'm new here and just installed OB last week. I'm enjoying this so far (only level 5 Nightblade) and I've installed the following. I was hesitant to start out with any extreme levelling or creature modifiers. I would like to know if there are any that are a sure thing, like for textures, quests, items. The lighting mods below are awesome as are the dungeon effects for Atmospheric OB. These Ayleid ruins are pure fright!! Haha..

I really wish I had a place to store some stuff though, is there an Abandoned Flat somewhere, like that mod from MW?

I don't think I can use unowned containers for stuff because the contents reset correct? What about containers with a red open thing on it, can I use those if they are owned by someone else? Or does my own stuff become stolen?

You shouldn't install an overhaul mod before you have some more experience with the vanilla game and know better what you want to have changed. If you want to have an overhaul, you'll have to choose between Fran's and OOO, which can both be combined with MMM. If you want the ultimate challenge I recommend FCOM which combines Fran's, OOO, MMM, and Warcry as well as some other mods. Whatever you choose, you should in every case have a look at the official release thread at the official Elderscrolls forums and read all the information provided there (readmes, installation instructions, load order, bugfixes etc.). Personally I favorite FCOM, but you have to know what you're doing during the installation process and fiddling around with Wrye Bash.

Concerning storage, no container outside of your own houses is safe. But as there are at least a bazillion of housemods on tessource, this shouldn't be a problem.

Its not a race, don't get ahead of yourself. Beeing rash and installing everything of interest you find is the fastest path to corrupting your game.

I couldn't agree with this more. I've hardly owned Oblivion for a month and within two weeks I had gotten myself neck deep in mod problems. I had to reinstall Oblivion three times for getting ahead of myself and installing mods that were either incompatible or installed incorrectly. On the other hand, I can't imagine playing Vanilla Oblivion any more, not after having experienced OOO and many, many other great mods. Just be sure to FULLY read the readmes and changelogs to gain a better understanding of what it is you're about to do to your game. If you can afford the space, backing up your data folder can help, although it would be a nightmare trying to preserve a character that has nothing but severely modded save games.

On a related note, installing too many mods too quickly (at least for me) can be pretty confusing since it becomes harder to distinguish between what's official and what's been modded in. I've made the mistake of looking for official Oblivion information regarding quests and features that were actually added in by OOO (and it doesn't help that OOO's documentation is limited in description).

Does this apply even to the "Guild Storage" containers in places such as Cloud Ruler and DB Sanctuary? Or are those the result of some mods too? I haven't had a problem yet with losing items in either of those storage containers.

Yeah, it's pretty much unanimous. Lower the number of mods to about a 3rd of what you have at first. I would highly recommend getting the Oblivion Mod Manager if you haven't already. It comes with an easy to use conflict detector. I would use only the ones listed in BLACK (no conflict at all) at first, then move to some green. I have only green conflicts and still have sound problems and the daedric shrines do not have audio anymore and I'm not even sure which mod(s) are responsible.

For what it's worth, I would say that Midas Spells of Aurum is probably the single most impressive mod that I've personally seen (save for maybe one comical addition that kind of breaks the style). I would say though that some of the spells are classic mage spells and a little too fancy for fighters and such, IMO, it should be reserved for strict mages.

good luck.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I will try to cut back looking for stuff except a house. I will hold off on any overhaul so that I know what's changed and how to compare etc. I played Morrowind for a good 2 years but never really used any of the big gameplay changes, just mainly textures and quests a few landmasses and buildings and NPC changers. But I'll check on overhauls later.

So it is definite I should not try to store anything in the Mages guild barrels I have access too?

I will deactivate the Midas mod for now, I'm not close to going to Arcane school and after seeing this video...it looks like it is definitely it's own set of rules and fun. Maybe they could have carpet dueling?

I did install OMM and have used it to make omods. I only have all greens so I guess that's ok.

Well time to go hit some Ayleid ruins...eek. I need to find a mid-level destruction spell seller though, the guy in Skingrad is too high.

In fact, that's exactly what I like in my game, and it's a good evidence how remarkable professional a lot of the mods are made. After a break of a few months i restarted OB a few weeks ago, heavily modded with FCOM, lots of questmods etc., and I'm absolutely thrilled how I steadily come across totally new things of which I often have no idea which mod adds them, but which simply feel "right" and fit seamlessly into the gameworld.
