Fallout New Vegas GECK Tutorial

Kudos for taking this on :)

I watched the first one. Good first intro.

Points 2 and 3 were v good.

Point 1 was kind of glossed over (most of us take that for granted now), but could probably have a vid of it's own.

ie. a common Q is how to open multiple masters, and another common mistake is to release a mod requiring all owned DLC's.

So the (pretty much essential) setup of the ini and removing the .nams might help.

Maybe making a HelloWorld type esp, where the user can see their own esp in the list and the masters it has used.

The actual edit could be a simple rename of a very common item that they'd be able to see in game.

Could leave it up to them to proceed to make the 9mm fire mini-nukes ;)

Keep up the good work.

I think what I may do is keep it simple now, and maybe revisit some harder techniques. So I may go back and teach a more in depth view of navmesh and so on. It's just the geck is so much to explain in the time-span of 15 minutes on youtube. It isn't really scripted, as it is a make it up as you go tutorial (since the geck can be used to do almost anything you'd want). It was hard to find just one thing to focus on, when trying to cover everything.

But I think I did decent. And smiley is right, I do need to discuss console use to help developers have an easier time testing. However I've honestly never debugged anything myself :/ (<- noob right here lol)

Ive only watched the 1st lesson but so far good job of speaking clearly and keeping it simple and not condescending

Also I like the idea of a simple HelloWorld type lesson but thats because of my learning style more than anything which is learn by doing and then messing around with it after words to make it my own when I know the basics

I would consider the second one a hello-world type as it gets while covering many important factors of the geck. As you more or less can follow along and build a simple house with me.

  • 2 weeks later...

I need some help on how to place the couch. When I drag it into the house, it appears as HUGE and beneath the house. And nothing I do seems to make it placeable in the house.

Any advice on how to do this? But besides that your videos have gotten me started on modding.

When you click and drag an object on a screen it may appear huge (because it is so close to your camera/view of the world/cell) Or you may have accidentally held down the "s" key (which alters the scale of the object which in-turn increases the size of it. You can adjust the size of the couch by Either (A) holding down the S key and moving your mouse, or (B) double click the object and then edit the scale under the "3D Data" tab.

I got the scale fixed but it still appears under the house and I have no way to get it above and press F

Then what you need to do is hold down the "z" key and move your mouse to adjust the Z-axis (up and down). This is also a 3D Data value which can be located at the object's "3D Data" tab in the reference window for the couch. :)

I tried that. But no matter how high I move it it always appears under the house. The couch is never visible inside the house, only outside, where the is nothing.
