Deleted3996262User
It's no secret that the shadow rendering in Fallout 4 is an absolute mess and hits on FPS like the bombs hit Boston. Hence we have mod to overcome this problem and play on a good FPS rate. Last night I downloaded Wasteland Workshop and once again all the fixes seemed for nothing and my steady 60 FPS hit rock bottom going down all the way to 30 FPS around Diamond City. Shadow Boost didn't seem to work anymore and even made some LOD glitch heavily (all railings suddenly became red). I can't understand why Bethesda doesn't fix this problem with the gaming being out there for over 6 months. Even the mods that help us overcome seem to break each time Bethesda puts an update or DLC. Before last night I ran everything on Ultra on 1080p @ 60FPS, now my game drops down to 30 FPS even if I lower down my settings to High and Godrays off. Does anyone else recognize this problem and how do you deal with this?
ddavies10693
Honestly this DLC is actually really tiny, and shouldn't affect LOD or things like that much at all. Maybe a patch would do that, but after looking through most of the DLC with FO4Edit, you may have another issue entirely. Have you tried tweaking shadowboost at all? Deleted3996262User
The LOD problem is Shadow Boost related, but it's the shadow rendering that bothers me. A little search on Google showed that there are more people who suffer FPS drops after installing Wasteland Workshop.
ddavies10693
That's so strange, does it give a reason? I wonder if this introduces some new scripts or something that now run in the background all the time. This DLC downloaded in literally about a minute through Steam, and the total file size is less than half of Automatron I believe, so it just doesn't seem possible that this new lag is caused by assets, textures, etc. The only thing that seems plausible are the new scripts for the animal capturing mechanic, or maybe the keyword changes? Deleted3996262User
I tried it with a clean slate (no ReShade, Shadow Boost, mods etc. just vanilla) and I have indeed lost 6-10 FPS when the DLC is enabled... This is really bad! I read a post of a guy that dropped this DLC as his game became unplayable.
MagellanDiMarco
I agree, as the FPS drop had me questioning my rig for a hot minute. I thought maybe a cooling fan connection had come loose, as my fans were running HOT. Checked my FPS and saw that in Bunker Hill and DC, my rate dropped to about 10-20 FPS. ALMOST as bad as the lag experienced with the PCP mod http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/2652/ when you try to move a pylon with power lines attached.
endaller
You could try disabling shadows entirely with the config tool (it'll make the changes in your ini files) http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/102/ Edited April 14, 2016 by endaller
zanity
The game engine is PREHISTORIC (and Fallout 4 is simply the Skyrim engine recompiled with the 64-bit compiler flag active pretty much). Shadows were hard-hacked into the engine via CPU rendering, not GPU rendering, and as such have atrocious performance issues. Fallout 4 was always meant to be a PS3 game, as amazing as that seems, which is why it does not use a newer engine. For that you must wait for Skyrim 2. Never ever expect Fallout 4 to match Witcher 3 or Dying Light for render efficiency. Dying Light, for instance, renders an insanely more complex environment with vastly better lighting, shadows, distance LOD models, particles etc at a far faster rate on my GPU. If only Bethesda had had the common sense to buy Techland rather that the utterly hopeless iD. Sorry, the only good answer is to take advantage of GPU bargains across the next 6 months as AMD and Nvidia release brand new GPUs. Bisaflor
Skyrim 2 ... wow that was really funny
ddavies10693
Zanity is kinda right though, despite the sarcasm. Technically this engine is same since fallout 3 I believe (as evidenced by the fact that all console commands are virtually identical) or maybe even Oblivion? That's why the one-room interiors of buildings still need a load screen on this game. They tried to tack on God-Rays into this engine and the result was a disaster. I have an Nvidia Titan GPU and the god Rays still sometimes straight up murder my framerate. Try disabling god rays completely and see if that affects anything. You can also try temporarily disabling the add-on through steam and seeing if that increases performance again, just for control purposes.
