CTD when going from Helios/Vault 11 to 188 trading post

I don't recall my game doing this before, but I just went N. from Helios along the W. side of that dry lake, along the rocks past vault 11, and about when I cross the road to go up to the 188 my game CTD's.

 

Tried a few times and crashed at about the same spot every time. Tried, after getting to the N. end of the dry lake, jogging a bit east at before and approaching 188 a bit more from that direction but it happens consistently that way too. However, if I fast travel to the Eldorado gas station (near where the lonesome wanderer hangs out) and then run N. to the 188 along the I95, it's no problem. In fact, once I'm at the 188 by that route, I can run S. to Vault 11 without any hassle.

 

Tried it with and without the 4GB enabler, and ccmechanics game stabilizer, with no change.

 

Not a huge deal I guess, as it's an area easily enough avoided, but I'm wondering if anyone's encountered this? Or, how would I go about troubleshooting this? I poked around the NV esm in FNVedit to see if I could find a conflict, but I didn't see anything specific to the 188 area to check. Don't have any mods that alter that area at all.

Sounds like something is in a bad state. You could try a save scrub. Save your game right outside the area where you crash, open the console and target yourself and type kill. This will kill you and reload your last save game, and may also fix the crash.

Well that's something I never would have thought of. Thanks Sunnie, I'll give that a shot.

 

Edit: I just don't get it sometimes. I replicated the crash at least 7 or 8 times in a row before. To try out your suggestion, I fast-travelled to vault 11 and went from there, but didn't get the CTD. So I f-t'd to Helios and again tried the same route to 188 - no crash. Tried from Novac - again everything played nicely. Just wandered around down south for awhile and, without any intervening fast-travels, headed back to 188 via the previously buggy route - no problems at all. Aaaargh (hey, wait a minute... this is good!) Thanks for the reply though, gonna keep that tip in my back pocket in case there's a next-time.

I crash several times in my vanilla game when heading to 188, if you have mods that add more NPC to 188 that can really kill me at times.

I have come to expect the crash and always save right before getting past certain land marks.

 

It got so bad in vanilla I NEVER got Veronica or knew where she was with that game... lol.

Where is vault 188 ? is that an add on mod, because I can not locate it. And I did miss one collision marker right next to the road at vault 11, so it depends on how close to that spot on the road you were. Sorry, I thought I got them all.

Ok, I was able to reproduce the issue, the trading post has absolutly no navmesh support. Some other mods remove data from that area so I found conflicts there, mainly the terrain, rocks and things like that. I will try and see if adding what it needs fixes the issue, If it does, I'll contact the author with the instructions to repair it, but it has no nav mesh data at all ...!!!

You know, despite what I wrote in my OP, thinking back now I may indeed have had this problem a looong time ago too. But it just went away like this one did yesterday. (Though saying that has probably jinxed things again). Had a similar thing happening at McCarren near the communications tower and, later on... it also just went away. (no jinxies.. no jinxies... :whistling:). Go figure :wacko: .

 

Geez, that bites about your lack of Veronicaness, she's pretty cool to have around. Especially since Willow and Veronica get along so well.

wow, that really surprises me... er, I think.... I'm trying to get up to speed how all this stuff works but I'm still way behind the curve so nothing surprises me too much. (not even sure "behind the curve" is a real cliche :tongue: ) But I thought without navmeshing companions wouldn't be able to follow the PC to and around the 188 trading post at all? I often go to the 188 trading post, but typically via fast travel, running more or less south from NV, or running north along the I95 and never had a companion following issue upon arrival. Again tho, that's an observation from the cheapest of seats.

 

From your stabilizer thread, I got the impression that collision markers act like ever-growing junk data sponges so, yeah, maybe the one near vault 11 had become unwieldy and crashed the game. That's interesting stuff. Thanks CC.

ehemm, you would not believe me if I told you what the result is. heh heh, the amount of support the geck placed into his/her file is astounding.

When the plater places any item from that mod into inventory and then travels away from that cell, the original mod as it is has no support for other cells. SO if the player were to say off load those items into say lucky38 locker or such, leave the strip, return, he may find the items gone.

The geck added so much stuff, I am blown away. But, it works much nicer now, I have a little more testing to do before I contact him. Have to be sure.

Heck yeah, I'd believe you. But I'm actually not using that mod, or any other one that (as far as I know anyways) does anything to the 188 trading post. Well, other than A World of Pain that adds 2 or 3 NPCs to the area.

PS After a quick play this afternoon, I again ran from Novac to the 188 along the west side of the dry lake and past vault 11 - no CTD. Really weirds me out. As I mentioned I crashed like 8 times in a row yesterday after doing that exact same thing but it seems the bug has vanished. Crazy stuff.

that mod is so tiny, it needs to be merged into some other ad don and encapsulation. as far as I'm concerned, it was just something to do, it does not really add anything spectacular to the game. Se la ve, I delete'd it. eh I have other things to do. But at least it allowed me to find something I missed so I thank you for the posted interest in a CTD issue. I track all CTD issues. I am only interested in moding game mechanics. I have no other interest at this time.
