THE computer and graphic card for FO3 would be...?

I am thinking about getting me a real PC for my FO3 at following settings and with the following feats:

Settings - maxed out or at least high.

All DLCs, Marts mutants mod with Increased spawns (NOT greatly increased, that's a suicide), Fallout wanderer's edition and a few more big mods.

For the cost, I would want to fully enjoy my adventures and my battles with all their explosions, laser volleys and stuff and with NO lags.

The machine would preferably be an upgradeable one with replaceable/upgradeable graphic card.

Will it be better to get RADEON or NVIDIA graphic card?

The game was built upon an Nvidea graphics platform, So that would seem like the correct choice, however I have seen users with ATI cards having better game play. This is a coin toss. the present game you have has a file that lists the cards they recommend. whether or not that information is of any use is up to you. I have found the OS and the DX version seems to be the key to game play extremes along with the OS provided display drivers for what every hardware your rig has. there is a really picky thing the game engine does when messing with the display settings and through trial and error, I found Monitor issues effecting how the game operates. Your question is a loaded gun, a ticking time bomb so not many will want to get involved with this issue. This is a question best make for those in the black arts of driver creations. Me, I'm and old pro of VooDoo cards, I know what can be done with any video card driver. you find a web site that deals with custom made display drivers for the specific games and you may find a much cheaper way to get what your after. I use windows 7 supplied 1.1 WDM Nvidea display drivers for maximum control. the replacement drivers upset the game and cause to many other issues to list here. Windows update can supply you with the correct updated driver for your OS. Make it happy, and the game will follow suite.

Hey, ccmechanic2

thanks for the answer.

Man, this topic is indeed the real thing for anyone who wants a real good headache, isn't it? But causing that's not my intention.

Siiigh...

I am an endurable person, but no endurance in the world will help me to solve something I am not an expert for.

Could you give me a recommendation, if I could do something to get even more from my current machine? I know, it's more of an arcade machine, than a real PC, but that's all I have for now:

Operating System

MS Windows XP Professional 32-bit SP3

CPU

Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T6400 @ 2.00GHz 53

Penryn 45nm Technology

RAM

3.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 399MHz (6-6-6-18)

Motherboard

TOSHIBA Portable PC (CPU)

Graphics

Default Monitor (1280x800@60Hz)

512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 (Toshiba)

Hard Drives

313GB TOSHIBA TOSHIBA MK3252GSX (SATA)

Optical Drives

Unknown system error: 0x80041004

Audio

ATI HDMI Audio

PROBLEM:

I HAVE OCCASIONAL SUDDEN LAGS WHICH I SOLVE BY SAVING AND QUIT AND GAME RESTART - AFTER THAT IT WORKS FINE... IN A WAY

your shy 1 gig of ram. Combined on that OS you have 6 total available, of the three gigs 1 4rd is used by the OS, leaving you with two thirds left, which is not enough to game for any length of time. your GPU and CPU are taxed to their limit. you need more ram. you also have a defect in the Bios or a piece of equipment plugged into it that is defective. the error message says stop. a hardware issue once taken care of will increase processing for you but you need more ram.

You want a CPU that is very fast running a small number of threads, like a Sandy Bridge Core i3-2100, i3-2120, or i5-2500 (i5-2400 is OK, but typically costs so close to the i5-2500, that it's not generally worth going for). Get at least 4GB of RAM, and Windows 7 64-bit. The performance of two of your CPU cores is going to be your #1 bottleneck. As generally inefficient as FO3 is, I don't know that any CPU would be too fast, but something like an i5-2600 would definitely be seriously overkill. OTOH, some game lags are plain old bugginess, and will exist on any system.

If you want to use a bunch of mods that improve detail with larger textures, or use very far view distances (not available in the stock launcher, nor FOMM), get a video card with 2GB of RAM. Even when FO3 was brand new, midrange gaming video cards could far outclass its needs, with only stock content and available settings in the launcher and game. You've got to tweak the ini and or use hi-res texture mods, to make anything good today break a sweat. Gamebryo, however, is quite inefficient at using video RAM, so you won't get as far with only 1GB as with more modern game engines, when you do make changes to see farther, and try to utilize mods with higher resolution textures. Once you go over your VRAM, stuttering will ensue. If your budget isn't high enough for a fast CPU and a nice video card with plenty of memory, get the faster CPU. Basically, it's impossible to say exactly what the best video card would be, because the specific mods and settings you use will really define it, it's hard to pin down those needs precisely, and what settings end up stable for a given computer seems to involve some amount of luck, on top of all of that. Gamebryo is not reliable and scalable like an Id Tech, Unreal, CryEngine, Serious Engine, and so on.

CPUs and video cards with higher performance cost more, so let your budget help decide the final details, and research the crap out of what you can afford, because model series and number differences are quite arbitrary, and what you think might be better because of model number, may not be.

ATI versus NVidia is not worth worrying about, at least not in terms of this game. I would consider a GTX 460 or Radeon HD 5850 to be good minimum choices for up to 1080P. You could get by with slower, but the performance for the money is still in their favor, for as long as the 58xx cards are around, at least (they are EOL, and will only get rarer). Faster can be better, but I'm not sure where you will stop getting performance returns for your money, on video cards. I would think GTX 560 Ti or HD 6950 would probably both be near the end of the line for improvement at up to 1080P, including beautification mods and or far distance settings (only available by changing the ini), and even then they might be overkill. If you can afford more than those, I think a faster CPU would a better place to spend.

Make sure to patch FO3 for large address awareness, once you are running a 64-bit OS.

The GPU in your laptop is not very fast. Its primary purpose was to relieve users from the craptastic experiences of that era of Intel IGPs. That you could play FO3 reasonably well on it I think is proof that it did that job well :).

Getting the game running well and fast can sometimes take some work. The TweakGuides.com guide for Fallout 3 is an excellent resource, but likely won't be much help until you have a new, more powerful, computer.

Good luck
