Steam GOTY should be the latest version of the game, and you dont use normal patches on steam, steam auto patches.

Exclamation marks= missing meshs when installing a mod, so it either has not been installed correctly, or can be UAC if you installed steam, into program files.

Your problem is NOT the patch - as steam is already patched. However the patch is included in the Shivering Isles part of the install, so the Shivering Isles MUST be installed. If you do not want SI in your game yet, just disable (uncheck) the Shivering Isles.esp and it will not show up. However the patch will still work.

Many mods also require OBSE (Oblivion Script Extender) or some other mod to function properly. Read the documentation that comes with each mod as some need things others don't , and some install differently. Not every mod installs the same way.

Instead of tackling some of the more difficult mods to install and get working first - why not test with something simple.

Normally a yellow block with an exclamation point is there to show you that the mod was not installed properly and the mesh indicated is not in the right place.

Load order (the order that the game loads the mods every time it starts) can also be important. The in game data list is NOT the load order. You will need another program to show the actual order - such as OBMM (Oblivion Mod manager)
