Can you help me efficiently level? Willpower won't budge...

Hi, I'm casting fireballs, using Major Wound, little fireballs every fight. I've hit 6 ruins forts, helped the brothers reunite and 13 hours after the last time I tried to sleep my bonuses are the same with only +2 in willpower and +2 in Strength even though Blade and Destruction are my majors and I use them all the time. I still get +4 in Speed because my agility keeps going up fast even though its secondary skill.

I don't have any levelling mods installed can anyone give me some tips? I read the levelling guide on tessource it helped me understand what I'd like to do, not sure if I know how. Or is +5 so hard and long to obtain that nobody does it?

Yes, I just want to prevent my butt from being kicked again like it did when I levelled last time and I've never gotten over +2 in attributes affecting majors so I feel I'm way behind even at level 5.

I believe you need to boost a particular skill twice to gain a single bonus point (ie. 4 destruction=+2 bonus). So if you want to increase your willpower, cast restoration/alteration /destruction spells. Casting Fireballs at walls does nothing as it only counts for levelling up if you actually affect something. So, basically keep casting Heal Minor Wounds or Feather on yourself. Disintegreate Armor/Weapon on self might seem like a pointless spell, but it will increase your destruction and having to fix the equipment you just broke can help train Armorer (if you want more Endurance).

I haven't read TESSource's guide on leveling so I hope the following link can be of some assistance:

UESPWiki's Efficient Leveling

It looks like a good resource for efficient leveling in Vanilla anyways. (I use a leveling mod so I don't have to worry as much ;))

Oops that wiki was the one I read, that's where I guess I saw the phrase efficient levelling.. I understand now that it might not always makes sense to use destruction I can use Alteration or Restoration to raise Willpower too.

Not sure but my progress seems slow at level 5 and 40 hours of gameplay. I do a lot of walking and exploring but I don't think I'm that bad. Only 2 Journeyman levels right now. one a minor skill. Well I'll reread that wiki and practice. Seems like I should be better, I think I've killed 170 creatures and 40 humans. thanks

You may have already leveled 3 or 4 times and they are stacked up waiting for you to rest. I did that with one of my first characters, waiting for my modifiers to go up. Once I decided to level anyway, I noticed that my level up icon was still there, so I rested and leveled up again, and again. The modifiers were different for each level. So, it keeps track of what you accomplished for each level and waiting to level up only serves to keep the level of the monsters encountered down.

So, my advice? Do a save game and level up. You'll probably be able to go up several levels in a row.

You know I thought that might the case but I guess I didn't want to believe it. I followed this and went up 6 levels to 11 and never got more than +2 in Strength even though I use blade constantly. Also, never got more than +2 in Willpower. I went to another guide that showed how many repetitions it takes for each skill to raise an attribute but I have to say this is really a pain to pay attention to. So I think my character is a weakling at this point.

I mean seriously how do you avoid training attributes you don't need for majors if you want to do everything like open chests or jump over a rock?

I went into that little mine near IC and fought 4 bandits and proceeded to get beat-up hard. Now I only had leather armor but it was completely destroyed and I needed 12 Potions of Sorcery and 4 healing potions to survive. I think I spent more gold on the equipment needed to kill them then I what I found in there. Maybe I'll go back to my save and level to 8 and see if I can survive. Could my character be doomed? Level 11 and Strength is 52, Willpower 47...highest is Speed at 62. Endurance is at 48.

I had no patience for watching my training as I played, I wanted to PLAY, not manage my character. (I work all day, I don't need to work while I'm gaming.) If you're on the PC, there is a mod I use that makes all the abilities you've trained a +5 at level-up. All you have to do is train it once and it will be a +5 at level-up. If you didn't gain any in that ability during the level, it will not have a modifier. Takes all the micro-managenment and hassle out of leveling.

Max Ability Modifiers by Visbontavon

This is a simple mod that sets all Ability Modifiers to *5 when you level up, *as long as a skill associated with that ability has been raised.* Luck will never raise higher then 1 a level.

So, if you made a good save prior to leveling up, load the mod, activate it, and level up again.

i agree with magnus^^

i run the mod too, and its very helpfull :)

you train what skill you want, get a +5 bonus, removing the burden of having to plan how much levels you need to increase that particular skill to get a +5 bonus :)

Ok I downloaded and installed, had only levelled to 7 after my last post. It seems magic item finds have gone up a lot, but I guess that's a leveling thing. So I'm testing out the world right now, it seems that imps are now the default custodians of the forts and ruins.

Now I haven't levelled since I installed it but it seems to be what I need since I think I have 4 levels easy saved up. I guess I need to find a guide that shows when inventory and spells change from vendors. Thought that was level dependent.

Time to head into Chorrol I guess I'll be a wimp and give them their sword back.

Now, you need to load the QUEST AWARD LEVELING mod.

This mod makes level-scaled rewards from quests be upgraded to their higher versions as you reach the level for those versions.
