mwhenry16
Without even using mods, during the first or 2nd play through for example, I noticed, bright girl that I are, that I really had no use for bottlecaps for the most part. There was so much to sell, so many vendors, and so much to make what I needed from scraps, I rarely had to use caps, I was/am always getting them instead. Are they obsolete? Will there be a bottle cap gun, ala Junkjet? Will there be an economic survival mode making them valuable again? (Disclosure: I have not played survival). Fatalmasterpiece
In Survival I find caps very useful mostly to buy junk and shipments of parts since you cannot carry nearly as much salvage on your back. Also I haven't taken the Scrounger perk, so I often need to buy ammo. Scrounger does essentially make caps a lot less useful though.
TeamBacon
I pretty much just use ammo as a currency.
TheOriginalEvilD
I almost never "buy" anything, I trade the loot I picked up on the way there for whatever I need, and usually leave the transaction with more caps than I started with. But, you do need caps for some building, like vendor stalls.

minngarm
You only need them to purchase the high end gear and weapons from vendors, the legendaries that cost 20k+
padraigsh
If a person has nearly all settlements, all connected, bottlecaps will just fill gaps (like I have this fusion core vanishing thing when I have had around 100 of them), but for upgrading stores, they're needed.
