A bit late to the party

Hello Everyone,

First, I want to take a moment to say T H A N K Y O U to all the lovely people who take the time to make mods for games like NV, Fantastic stuff, I appreciate it all!

I purchased NV in the recent Steam sale, figuring that a few of the early bugs should have been ironed out by now. Having played FO3, and recently replaying it after the repurchasing the GOTY version I can't help but use it as a comparison for NV.

I like where the player starts, it's a nice introduction to the game and it's systems, crafting camp-fire goods, ammo stuff looks interesting and was one of the aspects to FO3 that was not extended that far.

I found myself getting a bit attached to some of the characters, even if a couple of them did look oddly familiar :) I was a bit disappointed when there seemed to be no option to get a house nearby, though I would imagine that the developer could be accused of getting lazy.

So, I've moved on to the second location after the NPCs dropping some heavy hints to go there (it's got a roller-coaster). This is were I found my biggest disappointment so far. Being low level, I decided that entering this location from the front would be a bit too gung-ho, so I decided to go up into the hill behind and drop down from there. I was gutted to find I couldn't. Admittedly, most of my way was blocked by obvious cliffs or slopes too steep to climb, but there were areas where I could almost get to the top, only to find some darn invisible wall blocking my way. I can understand this behaviour when I try and walk off the map, but not in a location well inside the maps boundaries.

I also can't help but notice the rocks. Now I've never visited the Mojave, so for all I know, the rocks are spot on. But I can't help but feel that the colour looks wrong in their surroundings, they are several shades darker than the land they are on. And because they blend in so badly, they look like they have been dug up from somewhere else and randomly scattered over the desert.

I don't want to come over all negative, so I will also say that the different factions sounds like fun, I've only encountered the Powder Gangers and NCR so far, but I'm looking forward to meeting the others. I also like the idea of not being able to use all weapons straight off the bat!

I do have a few questions that I wouldn't mind simple yes/no answers to. I'm sure I could find out more here or on the web, but I'd like to avoid doing so in case I read too much and spoil things.

  • Does the player ever get a chance to own a house and purchase thing for it, like you could in FO3?
  • There's a robot in the starting location, does more ever get said about it's origins or why it's there?
  • Are there a lot of invisible walls in the game?

About the rocks, can anyone recommend a re-texture mod to make them look a bit better?

Thanks for your time, I hope I haven't bored you all!

Shad.

Hello!

•Does the player ever get a chance to own a house and purchase thing for it, like you could in FO3?

You get a chance, spoilers though, and wrong forum for it. Best house mod for me is: http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37884

•There's a robot in the starting location, does more ever get said about it's origins or why it's there?

Yes, spoilers again.

•Are there a lot of invisible walls in the game?

Unfortunately yes, but this mod removes just about all of them: http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=42285

Just a thought re: textures.

If you happened to have been running NMC's textures on FO3 you can install them into FONV with this mod. Tho, personally, I wouldn't stop there, one cool thing about the OJO BUENO texture packs (better resolution than the all-inclusive Poco Bueno) is that you can install them right overtop of NMC. That way you can keep the few little things that NMC has but OB doesn't (mattresses and stop signs come to mind), or stick with other NMC stuff if you'd prefer. And since they're individual packs you can mix and match the HQ with the UHQ. For instance, I use mainly the HQ OB packs for performance purposes but went for UHQ autobody and the UHQ mojave drop boxes and SS vending machines for some nice Ultra High Quality goodness that doesn't affect performance at all.

Took me awhile to get used to the difference between NMC and OB, but for example I now just LOVE the OB environment pack. You can almost feel the sand between your toes. (Versus NMC's hard cracked ground textures - just not too fitting for the Mojave imho.) The OB sidewalks are pretty different too, but REALLY nice.

Thank you for the advice folks!

I do have NMC textures for FO3, it was a bit jarring coming from that to the standard res textures in NV.

I opted for downloading the Ojo Bueno texture packs, and I must say they are very nice. I got Texture Pack 4, then overwrote with Environmental, Rugged Roadways, Architecture, Sidewalks, Lootables and Autobody. 1.7 GB of texture and normal map goodness :)

I also got my hands on Weapons Mods Extended, Nevada Skies, MTUI and Community Bugfix Compilation. I could not resist getting Blues Radio and Mojave Music Radio Expanded for a bit of verity.

Must say that the Mojave looks and sound much better now.

Thanks again for posting,

Shad.

To expand on some of the answers...

1. You can buy multiple homes, or get some through quests. There are also few abandoned buildings that could be used as homes.

2. Yes, I think it will be expanded more though in a future DLC.

3. This was the stupidest design decision in the entire game, luckily there are a lot of easy mods to fix this.

Also a highly recommended mod when you finish the storyline (or now, if you want more locations) is World of Pain.

Adds a ton of stuff.
