Mod advice/tutorial Link

Hello, very new to the modding community. I've had Oblivion for several years (got it a few months after it came out) But my graphics card got steadily and steadily worse to the point that I stopped playing due to the decreased performance. (actually bought it on 360 recently just so I could play it). Finally took the time/money to buy a new graphics card and boy does Oblivion play nicely now! (Except when wolves and mountain lions attack. think it has something to do with sound if i read correctly.)

Anyway, sorry to blabber on. Short story is I decided to (finally) try my hand at modding the game. I've run through many of the tutorials on the CS wiki, and I've read through a few of the posts here, but I really can't find anything that answered my problem correctly so decided to speak up. For my first true mod I've decided to make my very own castle in the mountains near the border of skyrim [i want my character as close to skyrim as possible for when the new game comes out :)] But there's the simple problem of getting to the castle. I can't find any decent tutorials on making paths up mountains, and everything I try just looks terrible to me and really isn't all that traverse-able.

For location reference, the castle is near the crab-like god that you visit in order to get the point book after completing all the other god's quests, to the east a bit, and just north-northwest of the necromancer cave near the same location. Pretty much the highest peak I could find that was still quite a distance from Cloud Ruler Temple and Bruma. I have doors heading to the castle now as a sort of teleport for testing and debugging. Also, the view from the top of the incomplete castle looks amazing. You can see Bruma, IC, Chorral, and Cloud Ruler Temple. I also think you can just barely make out Skingrad if you have your view distance maxed.

Anyway, any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. If no decent tutorials are known, I'll just have a back-story to where a mage owned the castle and you do a quest to receive his ring that teleports you to it. But would really like to be able to make that first hike up the mountain to get to it. Would make the castle a bit more "mine" in the sense that I discovered it instead of teleported to it, if you guys know what I mean.

Thanks in advance,

gwall

-snip-

Decided to make it to where you can only get to it by putting a ring on your finger and it teleports you to the castle. Backstory is it's now a necromancer's castle (well he found the castle and calls it his own) so I'm thinking of making it to where you have to charge the ring by using a black soul gem. (a little dark but that's what I'm going for with the mod)

Standard procedure would be to use the Landscape Editor in the CS to make a path by pushing some land down and other land up. This takes a bit of time, and the ground can end up looking a bit rough with really pronounced angles. The game engine is built this way and modders don't have the ability to make really smooth transitions between features in earthworks.

An alternate approach would be to do it all with boulders, stairs, bridges, and other things. You would place all these static objects to make a path up the side of the mountain on a grade that is climbable.

Thanks for the tip! I tried using the landscaping tool but it really wasn't working right for me, and what did work didn't suite my fancy. I may use stairs later on, however since I want it to have a bit of a necromantic look and feel about it I decided to make a ring that teleports you to the Castle. Thinking of having a quest to where you have to kill the owner in order to get the ring, and thinking of having it to where you have to use a filled black soul gem to recharge the ring ever 10-20 uses. Me not being able to get the path up the mountain really pushed in a lot of really cool ideas I doubt i'd have thought of if I had gotten the path working, such as a teleportation chamber that sends you to each of the necromancy alters, and another chamber that has portals to different towers throughout Tamriel I might decide to build.
