Alternative to starting anew?

I'm defiantly not new to adding mods to Oblivion. But recently, I installed something and now whenever I approach water, the game crashes.

I've been through OBMM and looked for a possible conflict, but I just can't find anything. I've concluded it's not ESP related and it must has something to do with a combination of files put together manually.

I've decided that the best possible thing I can do is reinstall Oblivion. The only problem is that I really would like to keep all the mods I've added along with my saves. I've been through this conundrum before, and it ended with me losing everything and having to spend half a day reinstalling all the mods I lost and spending a couple days grinding through quests I've beaten many a time.

So I ask, is there anything I can do?

You can keep your saved games. Oblivion should not delete them when you uninstall it, but to be safe go into My Documents\My Games and copy the entire Oblivion folder somewhere safe, like your desktop. Then after you reinstall the game you can copy the save files back if they got deleted.

When playing with a large number of mods reinstalling everything, especially if you have to download them again, can be a major pain. Get into the practice of making a backup of your data folder. After you install mods and everything is working well go into the Oblivion folder and create a Zip file of the entire Data folder (Right Click on the Data folder and choose Send To \ Compressed Folder). Now if you install mods that mess things up you can delete the Data folder and restore it from your Zip backup.

Thanks a lot man. Even though I have to redo everything, it's somehow reassuring to know that it's the right thing to do.
