ugh.. i need a pointer or some help if anyone doesnt mind..

the problem is i have custom textures for a dress i made aswell as house items im working on for another mod ive been working on, however my nifscope.. i dont understand what update i need for fallout4 stuff to work in it, and what i hear is that even when it does work its bugy at best?.. also i dont understand how to link new texures to items in the new geck at all.. i tryed a few different ways I thought might work but nothing. idk i just cant seem to find a way to link them on my own this time. so if anyone reading this knows what I'm talking about and knows what to do please help.

or if someone can link my new textures to my items for me? that would be nice, though I would rather learn to fish then be handed one.

anyway thanx for reading even if you cant help

There's a much quicker way that using NifSkope or G.E.C.K. Just use Oufit Studio (bodyslide and outfit Studio).

For background

A mesh is the shape of an object you see in game. The mesh (your .NIF file) contains information that points to the materials files that point to textures and the mesh also points directly to textures.

One way you can open this mesh (.NIF file) is by simply dragging it into the outfit studio render screen. Once you do that on the right hand side of the window you will see the name of the various references for the .NIF file.

Double click the reference name (one at a time if your .NIF has more than one reference). A dialog box will appear

The top field in the dialog box will be a reference to your materials file. Simply type in the path to your materials file (.BGSM) here.

On the right side of the same dialog box about halfway down there's a button listed as textures, click this and you will see the texture paths. Just type in the paths to your texture_d.dds, texture_s.dds and texture_n.dds files, press okay at the button and you're done.

Now you can export, export with reference your updated .NIF.

---

The less quick way is to use NifSkope, I say less quick simply because there's more information displayed in Nifskope which means there's more to navigate and click on to do the same thing as you might have done above in Outfit Studio.

In NifSkope you can also drag your mesh (.NIF file) directly onto the render window to open your outfit. In NifSkope the same two fields you want to update to point to your textures are located on the left hand side of the screen. Single click NiNode, this open the branch tree (the > symbol).

Scroll down to BSSubIndexTriShape and single click open that branch tree, then single click open BSLightingShaderProperty. Under this branch you will see BSShaderTextureSet.

The BSLightingShaderProperty references your materials files.

The BSShaderTextureSet references your texture files.

Single click on the name BSLightingShaderProperty, in the section at the bottom on NifSkope you will see at the top of the long list "Name" and on it's right "txt" with a path to your materials.

Right click the path just to the right of "txt", a popup will appear, select Edit String Index.

At the bottom of this window you will have the path field to your materials file, in the path make sure to include materials at the beginning e.g. materials\YourOutfitDirectory\YourOutfitName.bgsm. Once you type in the path, press okay and that's done.

Now Looking back up on the left upper section of NifSkope with all the NiNode listings, right under that BSLightingShaderProperty you just updated, single click BSShaderTextureSet. This will again display information on the bottom window of NifSkope. Here it's a bit easier, instead of right clicking you can double click each of the fields for your textures and type in that appropriate paths. Make sure to include "texture" at the beginning of each path e.g. texture\YourOutfitDirectory\texture1_d.dds and so on for each of the textures.

edit: corrected a typo

I didn't really want to download a body type this game as I don't have a problem with the vanilla, however after hearing all you said about bodyslide I'm pretty sold, it seems a lot more useful then I thought, and easy..

anyway thanx

Don't worry, you don't need to use the CBBE body for this to work.

Bodyslide is the CBBE body part, Outfit Studio really doesn't care which mesh you use.

... heck there are videos of people using Outfit Studio to modify shelves and add decorations to shelves as an example. Modders also use Outfit Studio to import meshes they've made in Blender3D into Fallout.
