Can you mod *clothing* into *armor*?

I imagine this is a simple question but this is also my first foray into modding, so I really have no background here. Basically what I'm trying to do is make some simple modifications to an existing armor mod.

There's some cool armor that is light and clothing, I want it to be Heavy. I figured out how to make changes within the armor however clothing is entirely different. So my question is: can existing clothing be modified to be armor or does it have to be "recreated" as a piece of armor? Assuming it has to be recreated, is there an easy way to copy an item?

The reason I ask (aside from saving time) is because I'm not sure how to figure out what the .nif files are for some specific clothing.

Hope I'm not too confusing, I really appreciate the help!

Yeah you have to use BSA commander to extract all the nif meshes and textures so you can get to them.

Otherwise you don't have all the .nif files and you can't use them.

And I think you can make clothing into armour quite easily by making armour in the CS and using the clothings .nif files.

You can get a decent tutorial that's not meant for it, not that simple but hey, from here.

When extracting the BSAs they are in the Oblivion installation folder. You want textures, meshes, and misc. I believe.

Is this object light armor or just plain no-defense-giving clothing? If the item is light armor, all you need to do is find the object you want to change in the object window of the cs, right click it, hit edit, and change it from light armor to heavy via the option to the right of weight. If it's just clothing, I'm afraid you will have to do what tsolless said.

Edit:Whoo! 200 posts!

Thanks tsolless I'm going to check out that tutorial, maybe look around some more so I can better get a hold on what I'm doing :)

And thanks Panzer, you were right and changing Light to heavy was easy; but some of the 'armor' is defenseless clothing so I'll be digging in deeper courtesy tsolless' link :)

Thanks guys!
