toastysquirrel
I pretty much hate the plane of Oblivion and don't go into the gates that much, I think I've closed about 6 of them so far. Does it actually do anything for the game's story, does closing them play some role? Or is just another dungeon experience with lame loot? Thanks! :)
ninja_lord666
Yup! Oblivion Gates are simply ugly, boring, repetitive, dungeons that serve no purpose except to destroy the scenery.
Malchik
The gates are limited as to design and so rapidly become boringly repetitive. That having been said they also become very quick and easy to handle - just run past all enemies. The sigil stones are powerful, especially at higher levels. You might want to check out the UHS website which gives a detailed analysis of each plane. One of them (I think it's the Portals of Natural Disaster one but I am not absolutely sure) has a leaning tower called IIRC The Embers of Hatred accessible from a very hard to find tunnel. This contains a powerful daedric bow and arrows. And I don't mean the usual heavy unexciting weapons the daedra in game use. This weapon is available whatever your level. Also, with the exception of main quest gates, the plane is randomly generated when you enter the gate. By saving just before you enter you can ensure you get this realm whenever you like. You also get fame points for each gate you close.
xenxander
As stated, the sigil stones are the reason to venture forth, so you can enchant some uber things (I think Morrowind would have benefited from sigil stones if they could have been implemented somehow ^^).There is one place in “Oblivion” that if you fall down to, you will literally be stuck there forever. It’s a hole that drops you into another level of the cave, in which there is no way out (even with 100 acrobatics) and you have to warp to the door to the cave using the console. It think this was an oversight, as I looked it up via google and 100% of the people who were unlucky enough to ‘find’ this cavern had to ‘cheat’ to simply get out. the name is "something" way.. it's slipping my mind at the moment. Elbo444
yea once your past level 20 (or whenever leveled stuff is highest) sigil stones are VERY useful, i had a full set of feathered glass and i could carry a ton of stuff, they're also good to put detect life on an amulet or ring which helps tremendously with the thieves guild and dark brotherhood quests, 100% chameleon is fun too ;)
Abramul
If the hole mentioned is the one in the Fume Vaults with lava below it, I managed to get out using Water Walking and Fortify Agility potions. Think I fell in while fighting a clannfear.
madman132
There are some Gates which are useful to close. In the Mainquest, each city gets its own Gate to be threatent by. If you close the gate at a city, the Count of this city will send you some of his Guards to help defend the City of Bruma. If you dont close the Oblivion gate near Skingrad, the Count of Skingrad wont send some of his stupid Guards to help out at Bruma, as he needs them himself. Well, the Guards are quite stupid and die in an instant, so their usefullness is limited.
GenghisKhanIT
Well, the Guards are quite stupid and die in an instant, so their usefullness is limited. You're right in general, but Bravil and Cheydinhal will send pretty good soldiers for aid. The only advice is to avoid doing "Corruption and Conscience" side quest in Cheydinhal before closing that gate, otherwise you will lose this town's very good soldier in the defense of Bruma.
