Making a low resolution retexture/performance mod

Recommended Posts

So this is my first mod, I'll be frank, I'm learning as I go. I have all the tools to decompress xbm files into dds files into tga files and back, I have a batch image converter that can work up and down folder trees, but there's a LOT of files and I wouldn't begin to know how to automate the decompression programs, and there's a lot of w2* files that contain models, animations, scripts, etc. The cutscenes inside pack0 are in .w2cutscene, and the main cutscenes outside pack0 are in usm.

So basically if I were to do this just on my own it would be manually decompressing every xbm file and recompressing them all after running the dds or tga files through a compressor. The other question is if there is anything else that can be disabled or compressed to make the game run even more efficiently...

If I'm right, this mod will allow many more people to enjoy this world and story than can now, myself included. I'm sure that at even half size, the textures would look beautiful on low definition monitors; we'd have to push them down to quarter size to start to really kill the view.

Is anyone interested?

Update: I updated my nVidia drivers to their beta 257.27 set, did a fresh install (uninstall old drivers) and uninstalled 3D drivers, and the game runs beautifully even on a rig with a 333 MHz GPU. I suggest anyone looking having slow framerate problems go here first:

So basically if I were to do this just on my own, it would be manually decompressing every .xbm file and re-compressing them all after running the .dds or .tga files through a compressor. The other question is: Is there anything else that can be disabled or compressed to make the game run even more efficiently

Just in case you don't happen to know this already, you can select multiple ".xbm" files, and unpack them all at once. This can also be done to the ".dds" files to reconvert them.

For the other question, I'm not sure if there is anything you could compress besides textures. If there is a way to extract and repack sounds, they could also likely be compressed.

Just curious, but are looking to just compress the textures, or both compress and re-size the textures?
