A Redoran Murdered - Rough Draft #1

This and Shape-Shifter will be my primary foci for the time being. This is just the first writing...a preliminary version if you will, to try and figure out what the meat of the text will be. I'll work in all the little details later.

No flak about it being short. As I said, it's the original text.

Sevaro Llarys, a Temple Ordinator, has heard rumors about Redoran warrior and icon Faryn Remandas being gravely injured. Knowing Faryn personally and not currently on any Temple business, he decides to head to Ald-ruhn to see if he can help. A tip steers him toward the local Mages Guild, where he is told about a Bosmer mage that is said to have seen what happened to Faryn. He tracks her down at the Ald-Skar Inn. His friendship with Faryn and his inherent dislike of foreigners in general lead to a heated conversation where Sevaro learns just how bad the attack on Farys was.

Enjoy!

"What do you mean he's dead?" Sevaro snarled as he slammed his armored fist down on the table, rattling the dishes and attracting the stares of the other patrons.

The Bosmer woman sitting across from him leaned back in the chair and crossed her legs. She crossed her arms and calmly looked him in the eye. "He's dead." She said, unintimidated.

Sevaro's fierce countenance vanished as he realized that his little scare tactic had failed. He sat there, looking at her with a hybrid look of anger and surprise. It was bad enough that she was an outlander, but on top of it, she was also a mage...which was synonymous with the adjective "stuck up: in his mind. He took a moment to regain his composure and then rephrased the question.

"How did he die?"

The lady smacked her lips as she opened her mouth to reply. Sevaro got the unspoken message of "Now, that's a better tone.", but he let it go. He knew that if he was going to get any answers out of the witch, he'd have to let her think she was in control. At least for now.

"He got mauled by a pack of nix-hounds while out on patrol." She said.

"And you made no effort to help him."

"Of course I did, but by the time I happened upon the scene and fought off all the hounds, he was beyond salvation."

Sevaro played with a fork as he thought about what to say next. He didn't buy her story for a second. Faryn might've been an old man even by Dunmer standards, but he was also a veteran Redoran warrior. A group of wild nix-hounds would've been child's play for him. It was obvious that she was hiding something; Sevaro just needed to find out what.

Sevaro leaned forward over the table and folded his arms on it. "There's no way in Oblivion that a master warrior who's been patrolling these parts for over three hundred years would fall to a few nix-hounds." He let his glaring eyes convey the rest. "What aren't you telling me, woman?"

"So sure, are you?" She said in the typical haughty mage voice. "No one's perfect."

Sevaro let out a small chuckle and sighed. "You really think I'm that stupid, don't you?" He scoffed.

The veteran ordinator leaned further over the table and lowered his voice. "Listen here, you pompous spell mumbler. I didn't come here to have you waste my time with stupid stories. If you didn't have anything to hide, then you would have told me what you know when I first asked you. Now, I know that you are aware that us natives take recovering our heroes' bodies extremely seriously. I'm guessing the Breton girl over at the Mages Guild you blabbed to and who directed me to you told my friends over at the Council Hall out of fear. If I'm right, then they've already recovered the body and are examining it. IF so, then I can go look at it myself to see if you're lying or not. And I can tell the difference between a cut from a nix-hound claw and a slice from a blade."

Sevaro watched the previously overconfident mage's lips purse and her gaze falter. He stood up slowly and leaned forward with his hands on the table. He was through playing games. He wanted answers. Now.

"Last chance, witch. What happened to Faryn?" He hissed.

The woman took a deep breath and stared down into her lap. He won.

"He had quite a few slash and stab wounds on him. I saw two people running away. To the southeast I think. He was almost dead by the time I reached him, too far gone to be helped." She confessed.

Sevaro stormed out of the building leaving the mage just sitting there with the patrons staring at her. Damn foreign mages. Why do they always have to try and prove that they are smarter than "stupid, savage, barbaric" island-dweller? He didn't try to pretend that he was a master wizard, but he knew bonemold and Indoril armor and many different types of blades like the back of his hand. Could she mend damaged armor? Could she tell two different swords apart from each other simply by feeling them? Could she fend off a small group of bandits by herself without the aid of magic? No! These thoughts raged through his mind as he walked through the streets of Ald-ruhn to the Redoran Council Chambers. He despised being taken for a fool. Nobody liked to be taken for a fool. Nobody.

Sevaro power-walked down the street toward the main road. He was glad that the Ald-Skar Inn wasn't far from Under Skar, since he wanted to find out who killed Faryn as quickly as possibly. His blood was boiling hotter than the magma in the bowels of Red Mountain. The man was an icon among the members of both House Redoran and the Tribunal Temple. He'd have time to be shocked and mourn him later. Right now, he just wanted to find out what happened to him.
