First of all, I'm a moron when it comes to "ZIP" files and most any type files. I have downloaded several mods and unziped them using 7Zip. While I have managed to find several of the Data files from the "Zip" downloads I can not locate where the RAR files go to. I'm using Window's 7.

I found the initiate files for the data start file. Where do I put the sound, texture, and graphics file? I use to put it into my ( game I'm playing) file. But with steam running the show I have no idea where to put these files.

Maybe I can't haelp .but If you wish to manage an archives files I'd recommend using filemanager. Softwares like total commander, altap salamander, speed commander have built in packer for all known archived files...you can open an archives like directory, copy them to other directory you want (with accessing hidden or hidden system both files and dir) without extracting/unzipping with feature known as double pane, which is not available in Windows Explorer (until win7).. all of them have trial version so you can try it. If you want free you can use "double commander", it can handle an archive files too...Not only known archived files, game archives like BSA can be extracted too, but until now only Total commander can do it(AFAIK) (need install required plugin, and only extracting not packing)..

I use 7zip, its free and its very easy to use.

Yes, I personally using 7zip too :), because it can recognize many archives format. If using Total commander, you can use 7Zip plugin or Total7zip which is stand alone plugin so no need Igor's 7zip to be installed..And the functionality as well as 7zip manager (compress and extract)..Most users using Total Commander because the functionality (all in one purpose), not only used as packer also as lister (Viewer) e.g. imagine(free lister and standalone image viewer), another thing most of plugins are free, and even providing the source code..I think, like a game mods :).

Another approach which can be used to accessing an archives file is mounting to a virtual drive. You can grab it for free here (only virtual drive is free not compressing archives). maybe they are using Igor's 7z.dll for accessing archives format, like FOMM..:). Another 'archive mounter' is Winmount, can also acces virtual disk images like VHD or vmdk....

It would be easier to help if you posted into the game forum of the game you are trying to mod. I ill assume you are trying to work with one of the Bethesda games - Witcher & Dragon age are different.

rar files are just another form of compressed file, just like .7z (7-zip) and .zip. If you associate the .rar & .zip file types to 7-zip, then 7-zip will handle them just like it does the .7z files.

For Bethesda games - If the mod is packaged properly, you can unzip all of it directly into the data folder and the mesh and texture files will automatically go into the proper sub folders.

For images i use irfanview myself, its a great little tool.

http://www.irfanview.ca/

I first using Irfanview at least 8 years ago, fast just dont like with associated icons :), also xnview is great alternative for browse images file. I like Nyam's Imagine to extract/create a gifs or icons (animation factory tools).

to OP, sorry for making the thread off topic. but i just have agree what bben46 said, in addition of he said, If you use x64 win 7, i'd recommend that you could use 7zip x64, even though x86 7zip still having shell for x64 OS, but if using x64 it can handle more than 2gb memory used...another thing about 7zip, it won't compress RAR files..
