Some Suggestions

Hey, i've had Oblivion since its release for the Xbox 360, but just today i purchased the 5 year anniversary edition and before i jump in again i want to address some of the issues i had with the core game via mods. I'm looking for any sort of mod that helps improve the texture quality, as well as one that streamlines the gameplay, possibly fixing the leveling system. If anyone would also be kind enough to suggest a quest pack mod that remains close to the oblivion lore and doesn't get to strange that would be great. Finally if anyone could suggest a mod that adds more armour and weapons that are more "low" fantasy would also be nice. I've seen a lot of armour mods but all seem a little too elaborate to my liking.

Oblivion XP is a very good solution to leveling, and combined with Better Leveled Lists, Cyrodiil becomes more dangerous for a level 1 character, especially outside of Anvil and near Shardrock. (bears and mountain lions reducing you to a nice filet)

I'm currently looking into QTP3Redimized and Natural Enviroments for visual enhancement. I will take a look at Oblivion XP, hopefully that will fix the primary issues with leveling. Also, do most mods corrupt save files, or can many be implemented without such issues arising? I'm still looking for mods that add more mundane equipment (the base game has enough crazy over-the-top armours and weapons already) and also a good quest mod. And finally, are most mods implemented like Fallout, by simply activating them via the mod manager?

'AFLevelMod' is my pick on leveling mods, If you go with level on attribute gains (it has a few different options) it prevents any exploitative power leveling. And Natural environments is great, just be sure to get the natural weather fix and you may or may not want the color override for it. The UOP, and everything involved with it is also highly recommended and I like 'retroactive health' as well.

'EVE HGEC Body and clothing replacer' with the 'High Res texture pack' and the 'high res face textures' additions work pretty well for me, and EVE saves a lot of headache over getting the right body, clothing and armor.

OBMM and/or Wyre Bash are your options for mod managers. OBMM is pretty straight forward. Wyre Bash on the other hand is quite complex, though a lot more powerful than OBMM. BOSS isn't a bad additional manager, it sorts your load order for you, though it's master list isn't perfect.

Edit: Note: Install the UOP, USIP, UOMP, and Supplemental files before installing any other mods. Otherwise, you'll probably have to reinstall the other mods afterwards.

Edit edit: I forgot to mention MiniMap, my personal favorite mod so far...

Unofficial Oblivion Patch is a plugin that fixes a lot of scripts, meshes, quests, etc. throughout the game. I recently found out it doesn't change the game engine therefore things like the scroll dupe are unpatched. On that page there are links to the "SI patch" and the "Mods patch" which do the same thing for Shivering Isles and the other official DLC respectively.

Unofficial Oblivion Patch Supplementals is a continuation of the work done by the original authors of the unofficial patches since they quit modding for Oblivion a while ago.

are all the texture mods and the unofficial patches done via the mod manager as well?

The vast majority of files either have an "OMOD version" or come with "OMOD Conversion Data" which allows you to make an OMOD out of the archive. OMODs are designed to work with OBMM for easy installation and uninstallation.

I'm not sure about Wyre Bashes support for OMODs.

Was this you too?

Never really heard the term "low-fantasy" except that time and this time.

Quests: Integration the Stranded Light is kind of a funny case in that it almost has more lore and sticks to lore more than the actual core game does. I learned much more about the elder scrolls universe from Integration than I ever did from the actual game.

There's also:

The Blackwood Company

The Elder Council (it has some lore teaching as well, but it's usually done through boring scholars giving you a lecture, whereas Integration actually teaches you about lore in a fun way)

Can't think of very many other lore type mods off the top of my head, but you should definitely read that other topic. Should be some helpful stuff there.

Note that AFLevelMod is very outdated by now, and has a number of problems. Instead of it, use Realistic Leveling or nGCD.
