Mod Debugging hints?

Hi,

I just recently bought Oblivion and started reading several forums and a lot about the hundreds of mods.

I decided to start a new game already with many mods installed, which appear to provide a much richer

gaming experience.

I also read about the various tools, the mod load order guidelines, etc.

Unfortunately right now I have two problems, one is particularly serious:

The game crashes to desktop, but consistently when I try to save a game (no matter if quicksave,

regular save or auto save). It does not happen always (otherwise I wouldn't have gotten anywhere),

but frequently enough to be very annoying. It seemed to be a particular problem while I was in the area

outside the sewer exit near the Imperial city (after the tutorial quest).

The second problem is that every once in a while the text in journal entries (inventories, quest lists)

disappears, like if the font is not displayed or similar.

Now, of course I am aware that these problems may be due to the specific mods I have installed

and that there is no clear solution.

But it would be great if someone with more experience could point me to hints or instructions how to track

down the problems to its source. How to best identify the potential conflicts, the possible suboptimal

load order of various mods, etc.

I do have OBSE (0012), OBMM, Wrye Bash and Oblivion-Tweak installed and used them.

The game is patched to 1.2.416 (latest patch). I do not have Shivering Isles.

Here is a list of the mods installed I remember (the more critical ones, there are a few more):

- UOP

- OOO

- MMM

- Francescos

- Unity OOO/MMM

- FCOM (to integrate all of the above)

- Supreme Magicka

- KCAS

- All the official mods (including Knights)

- This advanced combat mod with shield-bash, mounted attacks, forgot its name

- Thieves Arsenal

- Reineers Guards

- Several Texture mods, some of Unique Landscapes series, Redguard swords, This other sword collection (CES?)

- Clocks of Cyrodiil

- Bank of Cyrodiil

- Phinix UI mod (with darkUI and a few others, this may be related to the inventory sometimes not showing text)

- This spell and quest reward leveler mods

I followed the various guidelines concerning the load order, but probably there are still issues

with the order.

Any hints or strategies to approach my crashes would be great, crashes during saving are

particularly annoying. :(

Thanks,

Daniel

The game crashing to desktop isn't ever a good thing, or easy to figure out what is causing it. If you have less than 1.5gb ram, that's where I would put my money since you have OBMM, 1.2 and the three mods which hange damn near everything. Your computer may not have enough ram to process saving games properly. If not that, it might be a combination of the issues found in the 1.2 series and the mods you have. What you might want to do is reinstall, patch to 1.1, install the OOO version for 1.1, ignore frans, and MMM (has been known to screw up people's games), ignore the mods that are supposed to make them work together (might be the reason), and try playing it before installing any further mods. If it works, start out with the non-OBSE mods first, testing the game inbetween each install. If those work, try the OBSE ones, testing between each install.

Thanks, I currently have only 1 GB, I might consider an upgrade first to 2 GB and then see what happens!
