60fps inside, 10fps outside?

Whenever I am in an interior location, my game runs at a smooth 60fps the entire time but as soon as I step outside the framerate drops considerably, to a crawl. I have around 150 mods installed and when I disabled them all, it goes back to 60fps in Goodsprings again. I donʻt know what mod could be causing this to only happen in Goodsprings. Any help is appreciated.

Update: Seems to only happen when in Goodsprings. Once I leave Goodsprings, 60fps again. Even in places like Primm, I still get 60fps.

I don't have any specific knowledge to offer, but it is highly suspicious that you are having such as a massive drop in FPS around Goodsprings only. Some drop is expected in exteriors versus interiors simply because there is usually more to be rendered. You need to look into what mods you have installed that are specific to Goodsprings. Try to determine if it is everywhere in the town or only in specific spots. Also, pay attention to the environment (i.e. daylight or night, weather, dust storms, etc.). Things like flickering light, smoke, and dust particles can put a heavy load on a graphics processor. Providing your Load Order and a list of any texture replacers you are using may provide some more insights.

If you are using high resolution texture replacers, they might be causing a problem though they will usually be more widely spread in their impact. You can test if that is the issue by trying some lower screen resolutions and see if that improves FPS. (The impact of a given image resolution is closely linked with the display screen resolution in the amount of memory required to render the image.)

More than anywhere between 130-140 (depending upon your system capability) active plugins will cause problems in FNV. You can use a "Wrye Flash" Bashed Patch or manually created "merge patch" to reduce the number of active plugins needed, and "merge plugins" to combine non-conflicting mod files to also reduce the active count.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to try these methods later on when I get home to see if I can root out the problem. I thought it may be Goodsprings Filler causing the slowdown, but after disabling it, seems it is not the case. The only texture replacers I used really are weapon texture replacers so I donʻt think textures may be the problem and the game runs slowly regardless of my resolution. I thought the slowdown may be caused by the dust effects in Goodsprings so I downloaded a mod (CleanNV) just to rid the particle effects of the dust storms that appear there but it doesnʻt seem to have affected the slowdown at all. Iʻve used Wrye Flash to reduce the count but problem remains. My load order is as follows:

You have 160 active plugins there, though as you are using a Bashed Patch some of them are probably not active (the ones with the green "+" in their checkbox) because they were completely merged into the BP. (Wrye Flash has a context menu "List Mods" command (right-click on the "Mods" tab "File" header label) for copying the LO for pasting elsewhere.) Strange, erratic things happen when you get between 130-140 active plugins. You should start to look into "merging plugins".

I've been playing the "NV Bounties" series, but only installing each as I get to that point. I noticed an FPS slowdown once I installed NVB-II and "The Inheritance", which are more script intensive. But it was more general rather than confined to the Goodsprings area. "Reactive People" seems like it might also be more script intensive, but I have no experience with it. The "LightUpAndSmokeThoseCigarettes_edisleado" mod is a similar situation.

While a lot of "added weapon and/or armor" mods place them in Doc Mitchell's, that is an interior rather than an exterior cell, so I tend to discount them as the source of the problem. However, if they "initialize" when you exit Doc's, that might cause a temporary slowdown. But it shouldn't be there if you arrive from elsewhere.

Most of the other mods I've heard of problems with are not specific to Goodsprings either, so you are probably going to have to isolate the problem mod(s) by uninstalling (not just disabling though you can try that first) and testing.

Thanks very much for the informative answers. I have taken your advice and looked into merging plugins to lower my plugin count. I also took onboard what you said about initialising items and discovered the slowdown was created by Weapons of the new Milleniaʻs cheat cabinet.esp which placed a cabinet full of its weapons and every type of ammo into the middle of Goodsprings, causing my slowdown upon leaving Docʻs. I have disabled the esp and my game runs at a smooth 60fps throughout now. Thanks again for all your help.

Glad I could get you pointed in the right direction, and congrats on pinning down the cause. It was an unusual problem and I've made note of it for future reference. Thanks for reporting back. (So few bother.)
