Moraelin
Actually, I'll take a guess that they do. Because ultimately everything has a base id. All NPCs (and items) are instances of a master definition. A template, if you will. The base id is the id of that template definition, whereas the number you get when you click on them is the number of the instance. There are a handful of settler master definitions, out of which all settlers are spawned. So setting the master records to essential should do the trick. BUT... why do you need to set them essential anyway? Unless you used some mods that change that, all peons are PROTECTED. Which means they can only die by your hand. Even your companions can only knock them on their butt, but not give the killing blow. And trust me, I tried with Ada with dual gatlings, so it's not for lack of firepower. So, you know, just don't shoot them. Or if they die without your help, just have a good long look at your mod list and ask yourself the important question: where did it all go wrong? :p Just saying. It might be easier than editing the templates.
