Game is unplayable now...

The problem is that I can't play past the freeze, it locks the system up completely. I have to reboot the system almost every time it happens, other times I can escape to the desktop, but rarely. I've tried nearly every possible thing for the sound card but I never had any problem with it before. Oblivion ran fine until I uninstalled it a few months ago, when I reinstalled it I started having these problems.

Have you done a Clean Boot:How to configure Windows XP to start in a " clean boot " state

Its worth a try.

Ram:I once had a bad stick of ram that only acted up when I played Morrowind and then only if my memory load was above 60% and only when It was 80 degf. Morrowind would CTD every time I Opened a teleport door.

Drivers: Driver Cleaner Professional download [Guru of 3D] always with a clean install of the latest Forceware drivers

Clean the piss out of the heat sinks and the fans(cpu and GPU). Even the little bit of dust on the fan can screw up its efficiency. If your heat sink(s) is not getting hot to the touch when you run oblivion you might need to refresh the thermal greese on the GPU Vram and or the CPU

The registry: As a last resort uninstall Oblivion with the `Add-Rem Progs feature in Control Panel then use RegCleaner to remove the specific entries for any of these

RegCleaner 4.3 by Jouni Vuorio

Author : Bethesda Softworks

Software : Oblivion

Age : Old

If you choose to remove this item these keys would be removed

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\1.00.0000

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\Oblivion Character Manager_is1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\Oblivion mod manager_is1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\TweakOblivion_is1

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.omod

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\BethesdaSoftworks_Archive\shell\open\command

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Oblivion_obmm_mod

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TES.Master

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TES.Plugin

Just put a check by any entry for Author : Bethesda Softworks with Oblivion in the Software column.

then click Remove selected button in lower right corner. RegCleaner will save a backup if you have a problem.

Thats all I can think of for now.

Update:Codecs!

Case in point:Unofficial Oblivion Crash Log

Update 6 Friday, March 23 6:15 PM EST

Today I fixed Oblivion's random crashing problems on my main gaming rig. To fix the random crashing I ended up uninstalling all but the most basic audio and video codecs. Here is how it's done, but be warned, if you don't know what you are doing you might trash your OS.

  1. Goto your Control Panel, and open the "Sounds and Audio Devices" item
  2. Select the "Hardware" tab and select "Audio Codecs", then press "Properties"
  3. In the "Audio Codec Properties" window select "Properties" again

You will see a list of installed codecs. In my case the list was rather large, because I work with audio and video files a lot. You'll need to figure out which codecs are third party codecs for yourself.

  1. Select the third party codecs one at a time and click "Remove"
  2. Repeat these same steps with video codecs

You also might want to try this piece of software to help you remove codecs.

After you follow the above codec removal steps, reboot your pc and run Oblivion. Hopefully your crashing problems will be fixed.

Your list of codecs above seems to be rather large. Are you using a codec pack? If so try to uninstall the pack and run Oblivion.

I had no problems running oblivion until I reinstalled it recently, up until then the sound card worked fine as far as I could tell.

And playing past the freeze is, unfortunately, impossible. The game locks the the system up completely, sometimes I can escape to the desktop but other times the image remains frozen on the screen. It might be important to note that the system still makes the usual noises of desktop activity (the little noise when something screws up on XP, clicks when applied, etc..) It's as if the sytem runs in the background while the image is glued to the screen, forcing you to stare at it... taunting you with it's... tauntingness...

Might this problem have anything to do with Directshow filters?? It's just a guess, I fiddled around with them using some utility when I was trying to get another game to work, maybe that screwed Oblivion up?? Maybe it needs some kind of filter to work right? Just a hunch but it's been bugging me for a while.

I'm trying everything you've said, I've cleaned the heatsinks and the whole damn case with an air compressor so I don't think that's the case. I've also done what you've recommended for the registry entries and I'm about to move onto the codecs... but I'm a little hesitant because I don't know which codecs windows needs and what the third party ones are.

Could you type out a list of the codecs that Windows needs to function correctly? Thanks for the help.

Ok great< I just got back from working or I would have replied sooner

Here is a page with Codec tools Codec/Video Identifiers

These 3 look like they may help you. I am still looking for a definative list of the minimum codecs for your system so I will update this post if I find them.

Codec Sniper is a tool that shows all of the Directshow, video and audio codecs on your system. There is a column that says whether the codec is "OK", or "Broken". You can delete any codecs that you know are old or that you don't need.

GSpot Establishes what video and audio codecs are required to play any video. Shows framerate, duration, aspect ratio, bitrates, structure info, and more. Supports AVI, MPG, VOB, DVD, VCD, SVCD, MP4, FLV, MOV, QT, RM, SWF, WMV, ASF.

DXMan allows you to add or remove video and audio codecs and plugins. Find out almost any piece of information related to a codec/plugin, from it's Class ID, to it's input and output pins, to it's filename and path, even it's properties page!

You can safely remove any codec without worries because there are many good codec packs and a fresh install of Windows media player will give you the basics. What I'm concerned about is a codec that is interfering with your game some how. If Codec Sniper list a broken one that may be a good place to start. And I believe you may be right about directX so look here Directx Diagnostic Tool - How To Use It...

Uh-Oh... now things are worse. I removed all the 'broken' entries in CodecSniper and now Oblivion is REALLY messed up! If I click either 'New Game' or even quit the damn thing the whole system locks up! CtralAltDel does nothing, AltF4 nada. I'm starting to hate my computer and I think the feeling is mutual.

It's reasons like these that the word 'frustration' was invented...

I'm really pissed off now.. I think I'll go toke up, that'll calm me down REAL good!

I want some. It's been four years now without. :(

Well, :) this is not really bad news. You removed a broken codec that was associated with Oblivion. Now if I am right you can get all the codecs you should need to run Oblivion from installing the latest DirectX: Download DirectX 9.0c (full package) - the latest version of Direct X

And or Windows Media Player 10

But every codec or file one needs to run oblivion should be on the DVD it comes on or the package you download if you get it online? I think reinstalling directX will do the trick.

I forgot to ask, How well does the Creative card work with MP3s and AVIs and such?

The card works fine with anything that WMP or something similar can play, just not Oblivion. You were right about the DirectX install, it stopped the freeze when I clicked new game or quit, but I still have the same problem as before.
